This old chap had all sorts of bad things wrong with his heart and only about 2 hours left anyway; the nurses even hauled his hospital bed on to the balcony (as just like anywhere else in Europe its illegal to smoke inside the hospital..)

[/quote]She just did it like it was 1964 and it was perfectly okay, a manager told her she had to put it out or go outside, her response was classic: “well I’d have to go outside to put it out” so he had to put it out for her.

To be fair I get the impression that smoking bans in many USA states are comparatively recent, and globally people over age 80 are given some leeway in society as they can have genuinely forgotten what era they are living in..

By the time this photo was taken (2004) these old chaps in Groningen NL were already breaking the smoking ban (and traffic laws too, you are not supposed to ride bicycles and mobility scooters in the indoor part of a shopping mall) but the Council had already designated this area as an official gathering spot for seniors (the safeguarding protection rules in Europe apply to both ages 0-18 and 80-100+)
