I think they’ve caught him at the human equivalent of late youth/early middle age so he’s got a good chance of recovery, similar to Western pets who are put on diets (very common across Europe nowadays).
Asian countries increasingly treat health research as “multi species issues” so his treatment is definitely worthwhile – the tourists are equally likely to be from middle class communities of MY, SG and PH as Western nations, and are sharing the same food/snacks with the monkeys that they are themselves eating..
