Russia, Belarus and some other former Soviet and Eastern bloc countries but even many of these are clamping down and adopting the EU standards.
(Most Europeans who buy “under the table” cigs currently get them from RO, RU, UA, BY, even in my town I see the empty packs with these countries warnings discarded in the streets)
That said I’m not sure why the tobacco shares have dropped that much; as all that happens is double the amount of cigarettes are sold which surely increases the profits?
Well the speculators on Wall Street think that the number of smokers will drop and many will switch to e-cigs. And among those who buy frequently in America, the majority are poor so doubling the amount of disposable income devoted to tobacco isn’t feasible. I understand the drop in share prices although tobacco ain’t going anywhere.
I smoke rarely, had two grandparents die because of it and my lungs aren’t the best (sensitive if I over do it) but sometimes a spliff or a hand rolled cigarette makes life a bit better even if it is taking 90 seconds off my life. I’ll probably get a pouch of nice loose tobacco in the next day or two just to help with some life stressors that have cropped up.
Had to bum a Newport 100 at work yesterday just to make everything alright when I got off although I did notice a desire for more external dopamine this morning but a cup of coffee sufficed. I find with roll your own the barrier to entry is a bit higher, you’re going to have to really want that next one to bother to roll it for yourself.
GL, you smoking much anymore?
I still enjoy my Lucky Strike (when I can get them, my sister got me a carton of German ones as they are not always easy to find in UK) but have also been smoking JPS Blue (actually better than they used to be since the production moved from UK to DE!)
RYO is really popular in UK due to the lower costs more than anything – although I’m too clumsy to do it well and suspect if I could I’d smoke yet more anyway..
Bought 35 grams of Amsterdam Shag manufactured by Peter Stokkebye company for $7.50 (low taxes here but not the lowest). It’s a blend, I might go with Danish Export (straight Virginia tobacco) or perhaps an American Spirit’s variety next time, but I remember it to be very thin cut which I like ascetically for rolling.
If you’re good at rolling your own (I’m not great but good enough) then it only takes you a few seconds so you can smoke compulsively. This is a bit of a falling off the wagon as far as tobacco is concerned but I enjoy it immensely, although it killed both my grandparents on my father’s side so I suspect from an epigenetic perspective I’m hardwired for the stuff. At this point I’m willing to trade a few years off my life for a little bit of happiness here and now.
