Wasps!!!! Is anyone else mortally afraid of them? I got stung when I was a child, got ambushed by 5 of them and all stung me on my hand (as I was eating an ice-cream). Ever since then I have had a proper fear of them.
I thought I had gotten better but having just had 10 of the little buggers chase me around the garden I realise my fear has never left me.
Anyone else agree or am I just being a giant pussy? :weee:

FR: in France, cats go to school too :) I've heard of dogs attending British schools (and the kids read stories to them), but not (yet) cats...

SE : Fish transport of Sweden (auf Deutsch) The young fish cannot get to the sea as there are too many human created structures (dams, drains etc) in the way. So the Swedish Environment Ministry help them on their journey. This attracts a lot of interested spectators; and the German TV news!

TH : 26 kilo wild monkey captured by animal control, put on diet.. Good thing they caught him and got him to the vet; he was already suffering from the same health problems that humans in their late youth and middle age can get from too much junk food..
Also he was teaching the rest of the monkeys bad habits (in spite of presumably not being too fast moving he was difficult to catch as the other monkeys who he had been sharing food with tried to attack the vets and rangers!)

CH : Retirement home for camels and dromedaries set up in Switzerland Slideshow here (the captions are in German but you can look at the pictures even if you cant read them). Basically some Swiss hippies have set up a sanctuary for all the camels and dromedaries that retire from the zoos/circus (similar to the goose paradise in NL but with camels).
I think like most of Europe CH is stopping circuses with animals, so they are left with a load of older camels who are used to living in Switzerland.

UK : East : Rottweiller opens door for ambulance crew after owner taken ill.. the door was double locked, so the dog helped save a few vital seconds by springing it from the inside...
Megan, sensing owner Gary Gregory was in danger, jumped up at the front door of her Lowestoft home to release the handle and let in the ambulance crew.

US : Kitten Academy – school for cats They rescue pregnant stray cats, and raise the kittens in a family environment so they can be rehomed more easily. As well as their biological mothers, older cats (and a dog!) teach the kittens how to behave (it is only recently that zoologists in the Uk discovered the advanced social capabilities of small cats, it was when the BBC made the Catwatch documentaries...)

IN : Software engineer couple start 735 anmal dog rescue! Dude is only a year older than myself; and having started a sucessful software company with his wife decided to invest his spare cash in running the dogs home (in a suburban area outside Bangalore).
There are 3 times as many dogs as the entire human population (including the residents of the seniors home) in one village I work in!
To be fair it is likely to be far less stressful than raising children, you don't have to worry about dogs being able to pass the entry exams to MIT :laugh_at:

UK : NI : Stray goat runs wild after being refused entry to Carrickfergus shop Just had a look at where this actually was and it looks quite built up - not where I'd expect goats to be running loose (some chap caught it and took it back with him, presumably it was his pet..)

UK : LDN (SE) : London man takes pet tiger to childrens hospitals, writes book.. This might not seem like the safest pet to bring into the kids hospital, but apparently she was a particularly well behaved tiger (the chap had hand raised her from a cub) and all the kids were really happy to see her

MY : Malaysia firefighter did not marry snake, berates false English language reports I was actually watching youtube videos of this dude (and some of his colleagues in the Malaysia Fire Brigade) just a few days ago!
No, I did not marry a snake, says firefighter - Nation | The Star Online
I think this is him (the whole film is in Bahasa Malaysia which I hardly understand, it might be another similar dude, there appears to be more than one firefighter doing this).
These pet snakes are widely used in MY to train other firefighters how to catch less tame specimens - indeed Greater Manchester Fire sent some officers up to Kuala Lumpur to learn how to catch snakes a few years ago due to a spike in escapes of pet snakes across NW England in recent times!
I actually read several reports from blue light services and RSPCA about this phenomenon, although I am not sure why this is more of a problem in the North than the South, maybe the terraced houses and common sewers make it easier for the serpents to climb out via the neighbours WC pedestals..

UK : East : Essex dog warden captures escaped pig going through trash bags! Adam McGoldrick was doing his rounds on Slade road, in Holland-on sea, when he saw something moving among the rubbish so went to investigate.
He only caught a brief glimpse of it, originally thinking it was a dog - but on closer inspection it turned out to be a little black pig.
“It was more than a bit of a surprise and I wasn’t sure what to do at first - we often have seagulls or other birds ripping the bags but never a pig,” he said.
“I managed to round him up but had to call back to the office at Weeley for a dog warden to come and collect the pig in his van.”
