  • Whilst I support the cops catching muggers – its worth tokers and ravers being aware of the presence of the drugs dogs – and perhaps unwise at the moment to attempt to bunk a train!

    Forces tackle transport robbers
Four police forces have teamed up to tackle robbers operating on trains in the capital and the London Underground. The 15-day initiative involves 300 police officers from British Transport Police, the Met Police, City of London Police, and Surrey Police.

High profile patrols and drugs sniffer dogs are among the tactics being used in the crackdown.

The aim is to reduce, disrupt, and detect robberies on the rail system, Tube, and the Croydon Tramlink.

    ‘Loutish behaviour’

The initiative – named Operation Hastings – began on Monday and has been set up as part of the Government’s Street Crime initiative.

British Transport Police Dep Ch Con Andy Trotter said: “Robberies are a real problem for London. They are very much part of the yob culture which causes many passengers stress and anxiety.

“There is a spectrum of anti-social behaviour that extends from alcohol-fuelled loutish behaviour through to robberies and assaults on rail staff and passengers.”

A special control room and dedicated London-wide intelligence gathering operation covering all forces has also been set up.

again why the link between crime and drugs….not all drug users are involved in other crime yet everytime i see a crackdown on petty theft or violence, drugs dogs are brought in.

From experience [and I have hung around with all sorts of people who have done all sorts of things over the years] I’d say that there are some proper nutters about – but many are psycopaths with mental illness who would be violent whether they take drugs or not. I’m sure you have come across people who would start a ruck in an empty house..

Although it is definitely not all recreational drug users, there certainly is an significant minority who do get caught up in crime and violence.

This is because of prohibition – the fact that drugs are illegal raises the stakes for all who take them. People get busted for relatively small amounts, brought up before the beak (magistrates) or the fiscal, they get a criminal record or go to HMP and then can’t get a job, so some turn to crime to get money for their drugs and partying.

Others deal and of course you can’t go to the civil courts and old bill when you are ripped off, so they settle their differences by violence. The illegality makes drugs far more expensive than the real cash value of the the chemicals used to make them, which fuels the black economy.

There is also a culture of burglary and street robbery as a rite of passage amongst youth who feel there are no other opportunities for them, and a desire for expensive class a drugs will obviously increase the crime. But this has as much to do with rampant consumerism and a lack of community spirit being promoted through the media as drugs….

All of this will continue and get worse until society accepts that people will use drugs and fully tolerates use of the less harmful substances in a recreational form.

the thing is….i garuntee you 4 in every 5 busts will be of a recreational drug user with no “serious” crimes on his record, this much time spent dealing with said “criminals” will take up vast ammoounts of police time and thusly the entire operation will lose focus.

maybe – but the public will accept this “collateral damage” as many are stupid enough to believe a first time user from a good family will automatically turn violent after minor experimentation with drugs (and sadly this does sometimes happen but usually because they had a pre-existing mental condition) 🙁

in any other force area you are correct the cops would be overwhelmend and lose focus – but Scotland Yard have loads of spare resources are experts at locking down whole areas of the capital and regaining control whatever happens.

They have been doing this long before any of us were born.

It doesn’t take that long to nick, and book in the small-time recreational users (who will be left to sit it out in the cells) – this will probably be done by extra resources so enough cops remain at the station checkpoints…

TBH all they need is for the dogs to identify a couple of muggers with a 20 stone in their pockets and they’ve proved their point, whatever we may say….

Its probably best avoiding the stations where this is going on if you happen to be carrying any stash….

fair call…though then you have the problem that this tactic only catches those driven to crime and not the more dangerous ones with, for want of a better term, no excuse

if by that you mean violent “neds” whose motive is not financial or property gain then that’s way too difficult a task for the cops…

they can search a pocket or bag, but not a mind…

its more the job of NHS mental health professionals….

    has anyone seen “Tube Tales”?

    h**p://www.imdb.com/title/tt0176250/

that must be a scarey film if you broke the automatic link (or did the board do that for some reason? let’s try it again)
