the last ganja cafe in worthing has been finally shut down by the wonderful legal system. the most reliable place for my disabled housemate to get the medicine he needs has been closed down by police who clearly knew about it but did nothing for months on end. my theory is that the ganja cafe fell behind on its bribe payments. or maybe the complaints started to make the fuzz look bad. either way, the police blatantly knew about it forages before it was closed. when my mates got busted the cops joked about it, that was in march.
apparently the police set fire to the stairwell while trying to get in and caused loads of smoke, which cant have been nice for the people inside, especially as they knew the building had poor fire exit provision.
a great social hub of worthing will be sorely missed.
and reopened few days later:
Defiant
The Worthing Herald, 26th August 2005
WORTHING’S last cannabis café has reopened just days after police shut it down.
Up to 40 officers used a huge saw and cutting gear to force through two 5in-thick reinforced doors to get into the Amsterdam-style café in Victoria Road, Worthing, on August 11.
Two men and a woman were arrested on suspicion of supplying controlled drugs and West Sussex fire officers closed down the premises over safety fears that there was no fire escape.
But traders working close to the venue were appalled to discover that it was back open for business on Saturday with a steady flow of up to 200 customers a day, little more than a week after officers swooped.
One businesswoman, who asked not to be named, said: “It is a joke. If I tried to open a business with no planning permission, which was illegal, and had no fire regulations or sufficient fire exits and completely waving two fingers at the law, I wouldn’t expect to get away with it for two years.”

and shut down again:
Police close down ‘cannabis cafe’
BBCi, 8th December 2005
A cafe in West Sussex where it is believed cannabis was sold has been repossessed by police on behalf of bailiffs and the owners.
Officers entered the site on Victoria Road, Worthing, with the help of a locksmith early on Wednesday.
No-one was inside at the time, but a 40-year-old man who arrived at the premises later was arrested for being in breach of his bail conditions.
A number of people were arrested at the site during police raids in August

and finally, just for good measure, demolished into rubble:
Pot Cafe Up In Smoke
The Brighton and Hove Argus, 22nd April 2006
The final death knell for an alleged cannabis cafe has sounded as demolition teams arrived to tear it down.
Bulldozers were on hand in Victoria Road, Worthing, yesterday, to clear the building said to have been used for cannabis smoking for more than two-and-a-half years.
A large scale raid involving 40 officers was conducted in August last year. A large quantity of the drug was seized and the venue was closed, only to be re-opened again within two weeks.
Now there is no chance of it resurfacing as it is being demolished to make way for low-cost flats to be built by developers, Worthing Homes.

I remember the Cafe Expose in Brighton (it was Sunday nights at the Concorde Club), everyone was smoking weed openly, it was a real thrill to have bouncers walking round etc. while you’re toking on a yard-long reefer LOLOL.
