NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Two thirds of parents would ask their teenage son or daughter to take a home drug test as a means of keeping them away from drugs, according to a nationwide survey of 2,064 U.S. parents.

“This survey underscores that parents realize the importance of early communications with their children and are open to the use of a home drug test to keep their children safe and drug free,” stated Debbie Moak, co-founder of notMYkid, a national non-profit organization devoted to drug abuse prevention.

“We believe that fostering greater communication between parents and their children coupled with utilization of a home drug test are the keys to preventing drug abuse and addiction,” she added.

The survey conducted October 19-22, 2006, also found that 86 percent of parents of 12- to 18-year-olds have pointed discussions with their teen about the perils of illicit drugs on a weekly or monthly basis. However, only about 50 percent of parents talk about the dangers of prescription drug abuse, an alarmingly growing trend among teens.

According to a 2005 survey conducted by the Partnership for a Drug-Free America, roughly one in five teenagers, or 4.3 million teens, has abused a prescription painkiller to get high and 1 in 11 has abused over-the-counter products, like cough medicines.

Lets hope it does’nt get like that over here, it’s a bit strange considering there busy giving an obscene amount of young children Ritalin on prescription (mmm giving pharmaceutical grade cocaine to kids thats clever isnt it!:you_crazy ). I’m afraid to say that nothing would surprise me in the USA, land of the free my arse, the most corrupt democracy in existence. I did drugs as a teenager & still indulge myself every now & then & I don’t think I turned out too badly, the fact of the matter is by behaving in such an authoritarian manner may actually make drugs more appealing. This coming from a country where drugs manufacturers can openly advertise their product on tv (including antidepressants, which I can tell you from personal experience fuck with your head more than most illegal substances) I also presume that some of the governors etc will have either a financial/personal interest in these drug companies so advertising them is obviously fair game…George Bush & oil companies anyone! If big brother actually accepted the fact that people will indulge in drugs and put mechanisms in place to make drug taking safer (eg testing kits etc) then things would be alot easier. Instead the good ol US of A loves it’s power to deindividuate their citiziens in a bid to produce a superficially sanitized society, cos lets face it if you dare to think autonomously over there you’ll be ostracised.

better communication between parents and their offspring is a good thing

forcing your kids to do a drug test doesn’t exactly foster a trusting, equal ground for open communication channels

Not quite sure why you think methylphenidate (Ritalin) is in any way related to cocaine, Johnsee. Can you explain the link ?

I dont see any advantage to this personally,

esp as:
there are loads of ways of gettting round urine tests,
(i.e powdered urine for sale on the net / friends / old urine etc)
and some drugs (dependant on length of use and what they are etc) only stay in your system up to 72 hours so you may get a negative responce when they are using
The test doesnt say if your kid experimented once and decided not to do it again – and if your resulting to testing them are you going to believe them any way?

what does knowing yes or no achieve?
and what you gonna do now you know – and prob ruined your kids trust in you?

whatever happened to talking to your kids?

all it will do is make teenagers/youths estranged from their families, perhaps permanently so. Some may even decide to walk out of the family home and then survive by living transient/criminal lifestyles – this happens enough as it is already…

another thing that the social conservatives may have overlooked, is that the testing kits themselves could also be obtained and used by actual or potential drug users to ensure they aren’t being ripped off :laugh_at:

Personally I think I’d fucking disown them if my parent’s had ever done that to me.

Testing your kid’s is pretty much a straightforward declaration of ‘We don’t trust you!” It’s never going to serve any good.:you_crazy

I’m increasingly encountering parents in their mid 30s upwards, with teenage or young adult children who do actually take drugs together and attend raves in family groups… (and otherwise lead perfectly functional family lives!)

Both cocaine & methylphenidate (the generic name for Ritalin) target the brains dopamine system by blocking the ability of neurons to reabsorb dopamine, therefore increasing dopamine levels. Both Ritalin & cocaine compete for the same binding sites on neurons & have strikingly similar chemical structures (the same double ring structures with cocaine having an ether group & Ritalin containing more carbon atoms, however the primary ring structure is identical…I think) & the functional groups arrangements, & it’s properties is most similar to methamphetamine/amphetamine (well known for it’s parallels with the behavioural effects of cocaine, also targets the dopamine system & along with cocaine & other dopamine agonists, exerts it’s reinforcing effects in an area of the brain known as the nucleus accumbens – implicated in addiction, there are now links between Ritalin use & increased susceptibility to cocaine abuse in later life). The main difference between the 2 is that cocaine takes seconds to take effect (thus explaining it’s addictive properties as reinforcement is v.immediate) & Ritalin takes approximately an hour when taken as prescribed. However, recreational users of Ritalin crush up the pill & snort it & report effects not too dissimilar to cocaine (it targets the same binding sites) & animal studies have shown that rats will readily substitute Ritalin for cocaine. would you drug your drug kids for taking drugs with other drug kids who get druged by there druged parents?
as you can imagine it’ll be an expensive christmas all around:weee:!
