    Quote:
TEN people were found with traces of cocaine at the launch of a Nightsafe campaign in Henley.

Police used search arches, similar to those used at airports, and a drug testing machine. The arches were set up at The Slug and Lettuce, Rivers Nightclub and The White Lotus. No knives or any other offensive weapons were found.

The drug testing machine, which can detect traces of drugs on people’s hands, was also deployed in some of the venues as a condition of entry.

Ten people were found to have traces of cocaine on their hands and were refused entry. When searched, nine of the ten were not carrying any illegal drugs. One man was found to be in possession of a small amount of cannabis and was given a police caution.

Sgt Martin Jubb, co-ordinating the launch, said: “It was a successful and well-attended launch and will give people an idea of what Nightsafe is about, I thank the licensees for their help and commitment to the initiative. The kit was used in their venues with their full support and cooperation”.

“No one was found to be in possession of a knife or any other offensive weapon which is very good news. I hope we never have a need for the knife arches in the town, but the resources are there and they also act as a deterrent for anyone thinking of breaking the law, so they will be used from time to time”.

“The same is true of the drug testing kit. Although ten people tested positive for traces of drugs, only one was found to be in possession of a small amount of cannabis and no one was found to be dealing drugs. This machine will act as a deterrent to anyone thinking of taking drugs into any venue in Henley.

Ok right, drug testing kits on the door of venues!!! Fair enough on the checking for weapons, but this drug testing has me a little concerned

I am usually bumbling around the town center after a smoke, visiting a few bars maybe the odd time i have other things on me (picked up for the weekend).

I wonder how good this machine is? i am curious to find out more about it and if it is possible to get past it :weee:

    :bounce_fl

At the end of the day though Lee, drugs are illegal and its the risk you take. I only think this is unfair if you accidently come into contact with drugs without realising and are then refussed entry, thats harsh!!

Haha look at me taking the moral highground :weee:

I dont like the sound of it either Starlaugh. As for work arounds you could always score your drugs in a pub I know,I bet it doesnt detect glucose lol

    :laugh_at: @GoodDog

If they start to roll this out in other parts of the country it could make going out to a club bar harder if you plan to use drugs.. I must get stuff all over me :weee: (i am a messy bastard)

Maybe if they test only your hands it could be easyer! just would be hard to explain a pair of rubber gloves in your pocket :laugh_at:

considering something like 97% of all used banknotes carry trace ammounts of coke, im not suprised that of those testing “positive” none of them actually had any drugs they were searching for.even if youjust met someone who had done a line in the last day or so and shook their hand, you could be “infected”. its ridiculous.

on the plus side, it should furthur alienate clubbers from commercial clubs and provide more punters for your more liberal clubs and freeparties.

i wouldnt want to go to a club that had drug testing kits on the door anyway.

They had something like this once in Sheffield but at a club I’d never go in anyway

They have been slowly introducing them into the Thames Valley area and elsewhere over the last few years.

They are gonna become more and more commonplace verywhere in licensed clubs

they cost only as much as it costs to train a real sniffer dog, don’t need training, feeding, pooper scoops nor walkies, and don’t get tired or bored nor try and eat the drugs (the feds lose about two or three dogs this way every year)

Although false triggers may be a problem the cops also argue it shows the sheer exent of the drugs “problem”.

At the moment the places that get checked like this are the sort of townie places I avoid anyway, but eventually as the price of this equipment drops further cops and councils will start objecting to license renewals of clubs that refuse the testing are “overly tolerant”.

All this will do is drive drug use into free parties, and if these are locked down into peoples houses (and its at this point where people become more likely to try the “nastier” class A drugs) – which shows how counterproductive these strategies ultimately are.

I have been trying to find more information about these drug testing things and i have found nothing out!

Anyone know of any links to sites with information on them? 😉

    Ah cheers GL!

that has made it easyer to find out about them! Kinda cleaver little boxes of tricks they are! :hopeless:

    Cannabis test ‘positive’ for AMs

_40629578_drugcomp.jpg Politicians’ hands could have picked up drug traces from handling cash or using a door

A Welsh assembly member who called for his colleagues to volunteer to try out a new drug detection machine has tested “positive” for cannabis himself. Swabs taken from Conservative AM William Graham’s hands at the Welsh assembly building revealed traces of the drug, probably from a door handle.
He had arranged for police to come in to demonstrate the hi-tech machine.
Social Justice Minister Edwina Hart’s hands were similarly cross-contaminated also bringing a positive test.
Mr Graham, a long time campaigner on substance abuse issues, said: “I can’t think where I could have got it from”.
He had arranged with Gwent Police, who had recently bought the first Ion Track drug detection system in Wales at a cost of £40,000, to demonstrate it to assembly members in Cardiff Bay.
The machine can detect traces of drugs or explosives several days after a person has come into contact with them, even if they have washed their hands.

A swab paper is wiped over a person’s hands and then placed into the machine which then analyses it for drugs including cocaine, heroin, ecstasy and cannabis.
The resulting reading indicates how many drugs are present in the sample and at what levels.
It is so sensitive it can detect the equivalent in drugs of a grain of salt in an Olympic-sized swimming pool.
A similar test of fellow AM Ms Hart showed that although she had not been using drugs, her hands had been cross contaminated with traces of the substance, from door handles, money or other public areas.

    Edwina Hart AM

“You could pick it up from anywhere couldn’t you?” she said.
The machine is used by Gwent Police to test people queuing for a night club, and to detect traces of drugs in a house where the actual substances had already been removed.
A spokesman for Gwent Police said: “It must be borne in mind that anyone taking the test can test positive as a result of cross contamination.”
Other AMs lined up to have swabs of their hands tested by the machine with Jonathan Morgan and Owen Jon Thomas both coming up “clean” on the machine.
Nick Bourne, leader of the Welsh Conservatives, also got a clear result.
“May I pay tribute to the Ion Track system, despite the fact that both the minister and William Graham tested positive on it – I was relieved that I didn’t – but it is an excellent system nevertheless,” he said.
Ms Hart responded: “It can come out of cash, out of a cashpoint, a beer mat, or anything else. It is a very sophisticated system that can pick up anything if you have been in contact with someone’s jacket or anything.”
Divisional Crime Prevention Officer Pc Simon James said that while the results could not be used as evidence, they can indicate to officers that a person should be searched or questioned.
Mr Graham, who represents South Wales East, said: “Anything that deters people from taking drugs is a good thing. If people know this thing exists then they will know that they might get caught”.

Apparantly u can still get thru if you say you work in a bank and have been handling money all day, as that could explain the traces. Probably bollocks tho.

loads of people handle cash as part of their jobs, and cops can use a positive ion-track reading as sufficient justification to search on suspicion.

The only way to get away from this machine is to vote with you feet and your wallet and boycott all places that use it.

I would do so even if I have no intention of consuming anything illegal (such as during the week) just as a matter of principle. You can buy booze at the retail shops or even on line, and no-one drug tests you there…

we will all look like docters with our latext gloves when smoking up, could be a laugh, hahahaha.

i think the system isnt very good if it can trace that smaller amount, whitch means everyone is probably guilty. …… as well as my dog!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

absolutely. if its not profitable, most places wont do it, no matter how many brownie-points they get off the police. boycott drug testing.
