102, thats a long life.
acid – the way to a long healthy life… 😉
I don’t think he experimented all that much, for one thing the experience clearly frightened him, and for another you wouldn’t be able to hold down a job like his (which had a lot of links to the military industrial complex) if you were regularly doing psychedelic drugs.
he also criticised the recreational use and came across as a supporter of prohibition.
he is a clever man, and obviously would have been able to prolong his life by using his medical/scientific knowledge but to me he’s just another dead old man – he’s no more a trip-head or ravers friend than hitlers scientists were for discovering the precursor chemicals for MDMA..
they also invented methedone:you_crazy

he was pro the use of drugs for beneficial purposes
his obituary says
Hofmann always maintained that LSD was an important tool for investigating human consciousness, but as “acid” it became a popular street drug. In 1966 it was criminalised by the US Congress due to its allegedly harmful effects. Other countries followed suit. For the rest of his life Hofmann worked for its rehabilitation, while arguing that it had the ability to advance the human spiritual condition. “I produced the substance as a medicine. It’s not my fault if people abused it,” he once said.
Of his momentous discovery, Hofmann later said: “We need a new concept of reality and a new set of values for things to change in a positive direction. LSD could help to generate such a new concept.”
he was saying that during war time
i think he was a friend
A friend to the health services (fair enough) but not to hedonists..
“It should be a controlled substance with the same status as morphine,” he said.
a correction on this article claims that the word “crime” was mistranslated and he meant something less strong but he still disagreed and no attempt was made to change the suggested classification.
and he actually got what he wished for (at least in this country!), it got classifed same as opiates. It just happened the govts also said “no current normal medical use”
However there is nothing stopping NHS using it today provided someone will do the paperwork and the appropriate security procedures are implemented. The real problem is though that with the low morale amongst many NHS workers the temptation to steal it would be too much (or even do it on the ward rounds).
Even with Ket there have been charge nurses jacking up whilst on duty… (ambulance aren’t so bad, at least they wait until shift change!)
I’ve seen some proper fucking carnage when people take acid at raves, as well as all the fun things.
Personally I have never had a bad trip but one I did in 1992 did send me on this mission doing an escalating amount of petty crime which could have resulted in me commiting an act of violence but I then suddenly came to my senses..

i’m confused
you’ve just reinforced exactly his own standpoint
it has potential benefits, but hippies gave it a bad name

thats what I’m saying
a lot of ravers seem to think hes a “hero” just for discovering the stuff (maybe they are getting mixed up with Leary) he was just a clever man who discovered a useful tool but never wanted it to be used in the way the alternative community did (and perhaps with hindsight he was right)
In the same way that Gaston Glock is a very clever engineer but he’s not exactly made a positive contribution to the urban music scene (unless you are a UK garage head..) – and its of course extremely contentions whether the tools he created are a force for good or evil..
i dont think he’s a hero
i just thought it was an interesting article, i never even knew who the fuck he was.
the person who invented MDMA did me more favours personally.
That’ll be the Germans then! 😉
we can forgive the whole holocaust and invasion shit, ecstasy is sick as 😉
Maybe some Germans we can forgive but Hitler (And most of the Nazi’s) was and still is a very naughty bad man, Hopefully he’s in Hell right now having a pineapple shoved up his rectum upside down!!
ironically its also the anniversary of Hitler and Eva Brauns suicide.
and we’re still fighting that fucking war even now (bomb got found and blown up yesterday at British taxpayers expense)
