Environmental health bosses have launched a “curry crackdown” following a spate of injuries from exploding tandoori ovens.
Tandoor ovens are used to cook meat dishes, such as chicken tikka, as well as breads like nan.But Birmingham City Council officers found many had not been maintained or installed properly.
Only a small percentage had working ignitions and employees “routinely” lit ovens with burning serviettes.
allmost every kitchen i have worked in we have used burning seriviets to light the grills/hobs … tricks of the trade (after an ignighter has been in an industrial kitchen for a little while they just stop working cos of the grease that gets every where …)
if someone asks me for a light….i allways use a burning serviette as well 😀
I think its more the risk caused by design of a tandoor, which is like a big drum and so there is the “cannon” effect if fuelled by gas.. they should either clean them properly or use leccy or traditional wood/charcoal fuel…
I remember some British Asian dude built one out of a old oil drum (a tandoor, not a cannon, as that gets the anti-terrorist feds on your doorstep) in his back garden, he was either in Slough or Southall… he did even have the plans on the net once!!
that said them Northerners blew their pie factory sky high because of a sketchy oven, people really should use Gas Safe engineers and have them checked.. (I remember that video and that big hard fireman really looked like he was going to cry at any point.. must be like a major disaster to northerners… )
