  • This has been talked about before on PV but I just read another article in Geographical Magazine – thought it was worth sharing…

so is this about de-forestisation of the eco-system to build ‘factories’? my eye sight is pretty wack so i can’t see the text too well

sorry – I scanned at low quality coz I don’t have a fast connection at the moment (you can see it better if you zoom with your browser).

Yeah, it’s about the processing of saffrol in wildlife sanctuaries in Cambodia. I wasn’t aware of this until recently and it’ll certainly make me think twice before buying mdma again.

wow, thats fuckin shite, im an conservationist by trade, and this has flumuxed me……industry is a real problem i think

I remember reading about this – the rangers were about 50 very angry looking dudes who are about 5 foot 5 each (mind you so is nearly everyone in the hot countries of SE Asia) but the sort of dudes you do not want to fuck with – and they have AK-47s!)

I think the Chinese can now make the chemical from other stuff and without harvesting the trees but its way more expensive as there’s less yield from other sources..

My ancestors came from those jungles raaa

I didn’t know the trees grew in Malaysia but they are probably confined to national parks as Malaysia rinsed most of its wilderness to become industrialised 😥

yeah i’ve read some place that safrole isn’t essential anymore – would be interesting to know how much ‘environmentally friendly’ mdma is about…guess we’ll never really know. Trouble is once you start looking into drug production and environmental destruction this is just the tip of the iceberg. Latin America is the obvious example.

It’s certainly a shame what’s happened to Malaysia – still has some beautiful areas, but I can only imagine what it must’ve been like prior to industrialisation (and tourism).

the production of mephedrone and amfetamine has less eco-impact but they aren’t as “fun” drugs..

unfortunately it might have looked “pretty” but also a very backward country and British colonial policies didn’t help matters either.

Singapore was even worse, the place was a a complete shithole. Worse than Yarmouth and even until the 1970s conditions were medieval. Thats why they are so obsessed about neatness and cleanliness today…

although im all for conservation of the rainforests im sure a lot of other LEGAL products i use are probably a lot more detrimental to the environment than MDMA.

yeah imthe same, im not stopping buying mdma cos of deforestation lol sry

you could easily argue that it is prohibition that has caused this rather than MDMA. Aint gonna make much difference to the rain forest though sadly.

Hard to believe its a major factor in deforestation in comparison to other legal industrys but I haven’t read the article.

if MDMA production and use was tolerated they could use other methods which were less environmentally damaging, but at present a majority consensus across the world agrees rightly or wrongly that drug use is more damaging to a wider community.

Ironically the one country which could swing the pendulum by decriminalising / legalising would be China and in reality drug use is accepted more in some parts of South China than it is in Europe, provided the people turn up for work/college on Monday and behave decently otherwise! However I reckon it would result in political, economic and even military action against this nation despite its strength…

sorry – my title wasn’t very accurate….it’s not saying that mdma production is a major factor in rain forest destruction and damaging to the environment as a whole – obviously there are far worse examples of that which most of us probably contribute to indirectly on a daily basis. It’s more about highlighting the problem in a relatively small area, and one which provides the last refuge for saffrol trees along with a load of other rare indigenous flora and fauna – just a few more species about to become extinct….but yes, I agree it’s not a major issue compared to deforestation in other areas.

TBH I think the bulk of the MDMA produced by these means ends up being consumed in SE and Eastern Asia anyway. Because some nations in these areas up the stakes by enforcing the death penalty for dealing and production, this means that producers become even more ruthless (and also mean they would be better off selling the stuff in their own countries than smuggling across loads of borders and risking being busted)

Unfortunately I don’t understand much Chinese or other East Asian languages (they are difficult) so can’t go read whatever the Chinese equivalent of Partyvibe is (I bet there is one somewhere!) but there is a big scene in some areas. I even found some Chinese happy hardcore tracks on youtube :laugh_at:

here is a larger map of the area BTW which helps give an idea of where the pills end up.

NB: it is from the 1990s and some bits are obsolete, Hong Kong and Macau are now part of China..

im sure some day someone will discover another way to make mdma without using saffrole or fiinding another source for it jst a matter of time then we’l be flooded with pills again just the question is when
