I’m sure someone can be more useful here, but to a point different seeds are for different situations – like don’t go buying a seed for outdoors growing if you’re going to be sticking it in inside a room. Its not so much a case of “this is good for a cupboard, this is good for under your bed”, although some will obviously grow higher, yield more, etc. There might be seeds better for hydro, better for soil, etc, but I’m not too sure (I just did soil).
Get yourself on to a newbie friendly grow forum and read reviews (can PM you a link to a good one I used to frequent if its any help). Also buy your seeds from a proper shop, not just a legal high place that also sells seeds. If you need to ask any questions you’re more likely to get a good answer from a specialist.
The plants you grow should never seed. Personally I liked doing different things, so would just buy new ones for a variety. If you get a good crop and want to repeat it, you want to be cloning them, i.e. taking a cutting from an existing plant, not actually pollinating.
Last tip, its so tempting when you have your mates over to show off the plants and share the fun with them. From experience, I highly recommend you keep those in the know to an absolute minimum, else you could end up with local scallys, or worse, the OB (who take growing a little more seriously than possession) at your door in the early hours.
