So I’ve been on anti-psychotic medication for a few years now and unfortunately I am going to be on them for a few more years to come, I’ve read all the side effects and to my memory I don’t think I’ve experienced any of the side effects listed but I was wondering if anyone knows about some of the long term side effects, if anyone has experienced them, has stories and thinks I could be at risk? The side effects I know are nasty as **** I honestly don’t want to take this medication but due to mental health problems and dealing with the ****wit drug pushing psychiatrists (who are almost as bad as cops) I have to see since being discharged from a short hospital visit I almost don’t really have a choice.
Basically for the past 3 years I have been on and off Seroquel XR, Invega and Zyprexa. 2010 to mid 2011 I was on 10-15mg of zyprexa (can’t remember the exact dose something like that) which was reduced by mid 2011 and I was put on 100mg Seroquel XR which was reduced by the end of the year. Due to a psychotic episode In early 2012 I believe partly caused by withdrawal from seroquel xr I was put on Seroquel XR again 800mg and 6mg Invega. I’m now off the Invega which was discontinued in october but still on Seroquel XR currently on 400mg. I’m meant to be off the Seroquel Xr by January next year weening off slowly but I could be on it for longer knowing how my psychiatrists operate.
Once I’m off the Seroquel Xr I will have been on anti-psychotic medication for nearly 4 years. I’ve been thinking of weening myself off but I think it could be risky without professional help and my psychiatrists refuse to prescribe me the weaker tablets to ween myself off. So yeah If anyone knows much about long term side effects from anti-psychotics, has had experiences taking these med’s for long peroids of time or has experienced long term side effects, knows of anyone’s experiences or thinks I could be at risk please let me know would be much appreciated.
Cheers
I’ve experienced the usual with taking anti-psychotics like weight gain, drowsiness etc I’m more so worried about serious long term side effects after taking these meds at high dosages for long periods of time and permanent side effects.
This probably isn’t going to help and I wouldn’t really listen to it as I have no idea what conditions you have or anything so you may potentially need these pills, but I would never take medications for long periods of time unless absoloutely necessary. Imo your mind is way more powerful then you think and you can cure many mental ailments using purely your mind.
Your comparison of police to psychiatrists is a little disconcerting, police are there to protect people and ensure we have the freedoms we do without others going round killing and beating everyone – I really wish people would realise this before they go on hating the police, yes some of them are cunts but some of them are great people too. Of course psychiatrists will just prescribe you pills, that is their job, a little like people think opticians are specialist eye doctors but they aren’t, their job is just to sell you glasses and once you have worn them for a while your eyesight will deteriorate and you will forever be on them.
Infact, it is thought that the criteria for depression are so wide that no real diagnosis can be made and thus people are unecessarily prescribed pills. Can also see this in children with ADHD (Which I don’t believe exists but that’s another topic)
Anyway a google search revealed that Seroquel XR can increase the occurence of suicidal thoughts (as can many anti-depressants) however this appeared to cease after age 24. There was also an increased risk of elderly dementia related psychosis.
Anyways dude I was stalking your profile and saw you had the same birthday as me. Fuckin respect!! 😀

You’re a smart lad but judging by that remark I’m guessing you’ve never had a psychiatric consultation nor do you actually have any real knowledge in this field. Yes psychiatrists prescribe pills sometimes but they’re more likely to try and use an alternative method if available to treat a patient. The reason for this is that if they give you pills then it may be months before you need to see them again if at all, as if you find the pills work why go back to the psychiatrist when it’s the pharmacist that provide the pills. Blood tests and other check ups that ascertain whether or not the pills are doing you significant physical damage aren’t performed by psychiatrists either so medication is effectively cutting the psychiatrist out the loop, at least temporarily. Where as alternative therapies that pharmacists and GPs are unknowledgeable about as it’s simply not their area even if not performed by a psychiatrist will often at least keep them in the loop with check up consultations of mental progress.
Of course this isn’t strictly true as there are still some people who want to make their patient better using the most appropriate method for the patient but I’m talking about the 80 or so % that see you as a pay packet and nothing else

If he’s taking anti-psychotics, that probably means he needs to take them. They don’t just give you those for fun…

I’d like to agree but from what I’ve read from our American posters it seems they do
Plus, being on pills for a long time is just curing the symptoms not the cause. Which is why I wouldn’t unless I really had no other option.
all seem like good points…
ill people = gdp

Yup, they don’t make money by curing people. Theres only money in ill people thus its in their interests to keep them ill.

I am also on a right list of meds and is bloody hard trying to get off. Especially if you dont have the support which is much needed! x
I am on Seroquel XR 600mg a day and Risperdal 3mg a day (which was just reduced from 5mg a day). I have been on both for several years. The long term side effect that I have experienced is the awful shake in my hands. It’s almost a twitch. I believe they call it Tardive Dyskensthia (spelling) also known as TD. It’s involuntary muscle movements. Classic long term effect of these drugs. I am on Cogentin 1mg a day for side effect of these meds but the shakes still don’t go away they’ve only lessened. I couldn’t even hold a pen correctly at one point. Never had this problem until a few years of being on this combo had passed. I can’t say for SURE if it was the Seroquel or if it was the Risperdal or a COMBO of both. But this was my experience. The other long term effect is weight gain because these meds slow your metabolism and make losing weight SO difficult. It can be done but it’s ten times harder for us than the average person. I think u said u already experienced that. In my case, I need atleast ONE antipsychotic because I am bipolar with paranoid psychosis but I am working with my psych to get off of BOTH of them together (thus the reduction). They make me tired, lethargic, and hungry. IDK your situation but just be wary of the side effects they can be a bitch but antipsychotics really do the job in most cases. Lastly, the side effects of these meds is the reason I started doing Adderall, I couldn’t stand the tired apathetic feeling anymore. Just sayin!
Best of luck!
the twitch you speak of is much more likely with risperdal than seroquel
