There is (I think) some sort of University in the area. I’m not sure if its an open campus one or locked down like those here, but if it is open campus then it will have a Students Union bar somewhere and/or various communal spaces where fliers for such events are often posted. A big advantage these places is anyone from their teenage years to their late middle age does not look out of place there, as (very brainy) people can go up to uni at age 16 and still be a professor there at age 80.
Yes Leeds has a couple of universities (the main one I believe being open campus) and a huge student population, also yes it is a massive party town for EDM events; more so than any other Northern English towns such as Manchester and Birmingham (Birmingham isn’t strictly northern but I mean compared to London, Brighton, Bristol etc.) There are regular EDM events in and around Leeds often pulling in big names like Alex Kidd.
Don’t think it does much in terms of alternative dance though, i.e. never heard of a psytrance event in the area. Always seems to be house or hard-dance
