they are still used today to symbolise post and telecommunications (as in the CEPT logo below; the posthorns are linked with lightning flashes for electricity and the middle is a cross section through a telecoms cable); this is from a modern document the Ofcom man said I must read before using certain wireless equipment (the document was published in Denmark as CEPT (Comité Européen des Postes et Télécommunications) are based there)
