This report is from the BBC, although it is virtually identical to the TVP press release (URL not posted here for obvious reasons!)
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/berkshire/3971733.stm
Many of the rigs were seized by TVP, who have held them “pending enquiries”.
This matter is now potentially both the subject of a formal complaint by organisers against TVP, and an attempt by TVP and the building owners to launch criminal and civil proceedings.
As it could easily end up in Court, I will make no further commments on the events here so as not to prejudice any legal cases (I was not present anyway – thankfully!) – I would suggest anyone else does the same and if they have any info that may assist the crews it is circulated in person or via private communication methods.
I will however point out that this is the largest and most violent deployment of TVP officers in my local area for any reason (including trouble in the city centres or at football matches) that I am aware of in 20 years of living in this area.
Report from Wokingham times..
200 revellers resist officers at warehouse
RIOT police from across the Thames Valley had to be drafted in last Saturday night to stop an illegal rave at a disused warehouse in Wokingham.
A total of 43 officers from Reading, Bracknell and Maidenhead joined colleagues at the empty warehouse in Ashville Way, on the Molly Millars Industrial Estate, at around 10pm after security guards in the area spotted revellers on CCTV.
Police officers with riot shields and Thames Valley Police’s dog unit spent more than two hours battling against the 200-strong crowd which was trying to get into the venue, from which loud music was blaring.
Most of the revellers were kept out of the building and at around midnight police smashed their way into the warehouse — previously owned by Crown Fork Lift Trucks — to get to 30 party-goers who had barricaded themselves inside.
Insp Robert Bosley, of Reading police, headed the operation and said officers had to be “robust” to get the crowd in order.
Insp Bosley said: “Wokingham’s police officers were first at the scene but it soon became apparent they needed back-up from other officers across the force, or it could have got out of hand.
“The crowds grew to quite a size and were pushing the officers trying to get through. They were shouting abuse and swearing.
“We had to deploy officers at the five entrances to the building to make sure revellers didn’t get into the warehouse.
“While officers were fighting people off, there were many others arriving in vans, and we had to use riot shields to ensure the safety of our officers against such a large crowd.
“Once the revellers had realised they were not getting in and had backed off, we managed to get into the warehouse to catch the small crowd that had already got the rave going inside.
“When they saw us coming they tried to run off.
“I am happy with the way this operation was carried out. All the officers involved did a brilliant job.”
A nearby resident said he heard a thumping noise at around 11pm and made his way down to the industrial estate to find out what was going on.
He said: “As I got closer I could see crowds of people congregating on the pavement and there were a lot of police around so clearly something was going on.
“The music finished just after midnight and from what we could see the crowd were clearly unhappy that their fun had stopped.
“Lots of revellers drove off down Oaklands Drive and things then quietened down.”
Another 50-year-old resident said she had turned into Molly Millars Lane from Finchampstead Road at about 12.20am only to find it closed off by police.
She said: “As I turned the car round I saw crowds of people outside the warehouse, and police officers with dogs standing in front of them trying to stop them getting in.
“I could see smashed windows to the warehouse and the police waved me on before I could see any more.
“It was intimidating as we drove past the crowds of people and it looked like trouble could spark off at any time.”
John McLaughlin, from the nearby Furniture Superstore Ltd in Molly Millars Lane, said staff had to clear lager cans, wine bottles and other debris which had been strewn all over the pavement outside by revellers.
l Three people have been arrested on suspicion of public order and violent disorder offences, including a 24-year-old man from Stokenchurch, a 16-year-old from Dorset, and a 32-year-old man from Bournemouth.
A further report from the Bracknell chronicle..
By Richard Crowe
A CROWD of ravers confronted police at an illegal gathering in a Wokingham warehouse at the weekend.
More than 200 people flocked to the rave in the empty Lanier Buildings on the Molly Millar’s Industrial Estate on Saturday night.
Police, some in riot gear, arrived at the scene at 10pm after being alerted by a security guard.
Within 30 minutes of officers arriving, further people gathered at the scene and tried to enter the building.
Police eventually smashed their way into the building through a window. They claim they were then confronted by hostile crowd members as they confiscated five giant speaker systems and broke up the event.
Police claim that organisers of the rave urged on the crowd to attack them.
The area was cleared by 2am. Mum of three, Wendy Preston, 48, lives opposite the building in Molly Millar’s Lane.
She said: “I was very annoyed.
It was really loud so in the end I just put some earplugs in and went to bed.
“My son came home at about 2am and saw the police loading sound equipment into a van.”
The rave happened in the same building as a 2003 New Year’s Eve party which attracted 2,000 people.
Simon Jordan, 32, of nearby Oakey Drive, did not hear Saturday’s party but is concerned that another similar-sized event to the one last time could happen again.
He said: “A big worry for residents is that these buildings still haven’t been properly secured. It took 10 months for windows on the building used last time to be mended. “People can easily break in again.”
Lanier Ltd, which is based in Winnersh, said they could not comment until the investigation was complete.
Police spokesman Ron Card said they had managed to stop the event before it had really got going.
Three people arrested in connection with the incident are due to reappear at an unnamed police station at a later date.
ouch 😡
i do sometimes forget how hard it can be just to have fun and how harshly police do react on occasion… it has been a while since the police were this heavy handed around here
My thoughts are with those who lost their equipment… PLUR
any news?
nothing yet unfortunately; will be speaking to a friend who was there later this week so hopefully will have some updates – provided nothings ending up in Court!
I have though been given the impression that TVP will eventually return the equipment; their main priority was to stop that particular event due to the damage and disruption caused at the previous NYE party in that building.
Next court case regardingthis is 11th May 0945 at Slough magistrates.
Many charged with PEL, one charged with Sec63.
If you’re free and in the area, support is always nice.
I love the way the reports are so one sided- they are very quick to report the minority of a c4rowd shouting abuse and jeering at the police but Im sure the majority of the crowd didnt cause them any trouble. Nice to see all ravers being tarred with the same brush…
Just read they should be getting their rigs back in the next few days along with a £2000 fine though
