  • Do Blunkett’s law and order reforms appear to anyone as the encroachment of a police state, what with drug testing for criminals (being done for possession if blood tests positive!) detention without trial for “suspected” terrorists, phone tapping submissible as evidence, judge only trials on the horizon, what can be done by we the people to reclaim the initiative and stop the onset of a Brave New World?

For all Blunketts control freakery, these aren’t just his
reforms. The terrorism paranoia comes from the old bill and MIx (as you would expect following 9/11, Madrid and Beslan) – but the stuff on drugs reform has mostly come about because middle englanders moaned and whinged to their MPs about crime levels, and many were angered by the half-baked cannabis downgrading experiment.

The MPs realise to be elected “something must be done” so they get these policies pushed through via the appropriate ministers and Departments.

Perhaps “we the people” need to unite across our generational and societal boudnaries, and stop fearing, hating and mistrusting one another! It needs give and take on both sides though..

I am worried about these things too, the idea that makes me most angry though is the ID card one. I hate the idea of these faceless corporations or the govt having info on me. I heard there will be fines of £1000s if you dont tell the govt you’ve moved house??? I don’t have any of those loyalty cards for the same reason. Corporations are as moral as the lowest sub human greed obsessed moron working for them.

I enjoy playing the game in the week, going to work (as an accountant!), having a mortgage, appearing to be a respectable law abiding citizen…etc BUT, juxtaposed with going to parties, taking drugs, dancing all night, taking es on a Sunday afternoon. I want a degree of anonimity so I feel safe in my pastimes.

My nightmare scenario is:…all computer systems united, so the ob clock u parking at a party, trace the licence plate, they’re waiting for you at home, house search follows, rugs unearthed ..then prison sentence plus awkward questions at work/enforced ‘rehab’ etc.
I heard the ID thing will cost £3billion. Cant understand why people aren’t up in arms given the sorry state of public transpost, schools etc. Leads me to believe these proposals are something NEW, a diversionery tactic so we forget about the real issues that affect everyone, not some ‘unnamed fear’. Terrorists are out there. ID cards will not stop them – fact. Look at Madrid. Spain has had ID cards for years.
I have decided to take action: I am writing to my MP. Plus continuing with my peaceful protest against wrong laws by partying as much as possible.

    PEACE

This does seem like the craziest peice of legislation in my lifetime that im aware of, so respect to sambo for picking up that pen.

i’ve done the same, but have found from experience that writing to your mp alone is not that effective. if you’ve got the framework of the letter, then iwould suggest sending it to other mps out of surrey that are more likely to be on your side and represent you as well (they work for you.com is the best place to find out). also local and national press is a must, as this is the biggest political forum i can find in UK. if you’re an accountant, then they might listento you more than some pikey student, especially if you get freinds to sign your letter in agreement. eveni’ve had a couple of letters in the guardian and independant printed (on human and civil rights and provision for a craetive youth).

anyway. nice one sambo, the more people on the case,. the more chance we have. its as simple as that.
