DJVU’s posts for the RBI launch party always remind me of this TV programe from the 80s; there was gilbert the alien on it and he used to sing
(we’d also sing this at school and piss the teachers off)
he’d also squirt bare green snot all over his celebrity guests (the bloke who did his voice was a speed freek as well :D)
anyone else remember this?
Yeah I remember that dude!
I even remember the programme. Ghost Train I think it was called. Alongside Jenny Powell.
It’s reminded me of a similar prog called “Round the Bend” hosted by a crocidile I think.
mmm, jenny powell 😮
IIRC “Get Fresh” was the Saturday morning show with Gilbert; but he also had his own show “Gilbert’s Fridge” in the afternoons where the Hitchin song came from. ISTR it was remarkably “streetwise” for a kids show and more like the older teens/young adults progs of the time (such as The Tube). One of the better things Janet-Street Porter was involved in..
“Ghost Train” was later – around 1989 to 1992 or so; Cornwell may have done the voice for Nobby the Sheep as well (although he put on a Welsh accent).
Both shows had the same production teams (YTV/Border/Tyne Tees regions for OB’s + Anglia doing a studio insert) which is why they are easily confused; the format and style was much the same but toned down a bit as Gilbert had led to some complaints to the IBA (now Ofcom); on live TV he once asked the rasta drummer of Aswad to “skin up” and is alleged to have groped Paula Abdul 😀
Ahh yes. I completely forgot about get fresh they all kind of merged in to one.

that is some encyclopedic knowledge, you got there, Gen. cheers for reminding me of the wonder of Gilbert- and givin some quality trivia to astound my fellow caners.
round the bend was great- its such a bitchin shame that kids tv is soooo 2d, formulaic and bland. unless someone wants to prove me wrong……
have to say, although far from subversive, that my fondest memories are of “Trapdoor” with its amazing yet simple animation, quality regional accents (west country Berk, snobby Boney and i recon Him Upstairs was northern-prop wrong tho). so cool when you remember being IN something, instead of watching it…know what i mean?
to be fair some of the stuff I found came up when I searched for the picture of Gilbert; although I did do a lot of research into magazine format shows aimed at youth audiences when I was trying to pitch a music-based one to our local cable company..
IMO the reason TV is fucked up is because they are so scared of pissing off moaning mary whitehouse types with genuinely “anarchic” stuff; yet for some reason seem the industry seems to thrive on depressing soap operas and cop shows filled with crime, infidelity and domestic violence which make this sort of crap seem “normal..” or “reality shows” which encourage conflict…

Yep; that was proper bo; RIP willie rushton..
You were tryin to get into media at one point, gen? how come/what was your role? If only the potential of local tv (and national for that matter) was realised – should blatantly more like the net – at least the crap on here is varied!
I tried doing some sets with a mate at uni radio – sets ranging from drumand bass, through reggae and hiphop and into th ecalm water of folk and blue via jazz . anyway, folks loved it, but the guys who ran the equipment always complained that noone would like it- based on nothing. we only transmitted about 100m! i think its some weird power trip about being in control of what people watch / hear. bit like mc’s who wont give up the mic. in fact identical.
newsflashnewsflashn LOON! JENNY POWELL IS NOT FIT! FACT!newsflashnews
you sick little puppy…
Yeah trapdoor was wicked. In fact I downloaded a few of them the other day. Not usually one for pirating but I can’t exactly get hold of any trapdoor on DVD or VHS very easily. I also downloaded a few fraggle rocks and Uylesses 31. Reminded me of a time when things seemed warm and fuzzy.
And yeah I totally get what you mean about being in the programme rather than watching it. But i’m afraid I have to disagree with your completely preposterous comments that Jenny Powell is anything but fit.
She looked like underbaked dough, and now does panto. surely thats enough to put off any man. i think fhm did some spread of her a couple of months ago and i do mean spread. lard, she looked like.
Anyway that wasn’t me, it was a genuine world wide news flash that some how hijacked my thread. didnt you read? it said FACT in big letters, not OPINION.
dont you pretend she’s fit too, thats just ridiculous.
Well she was better than sarah green.
What’s happened to her anyway? Philip went on to great heights and she disappeared?
I’m disgusted that you read FHM USE. You ‘lad’ :-p
a number of roles; firstly as a pirate DJ; then working on RSLs and trying (unsuccesfully) to move into the regional media (which was just starting to be downsized); although for 3 years I did work as a project engineer for one of the tech companies which made TV studio equipment – rather like building rigs, but with less fun and more stress.
It was in fact rather soul-destroying as you were sending customers loads of kit which I knew could do so much with but it was only being used at a fraction of its capabilities and mostly to reduce headcount rather than make the programmes any better.
I wanted to put across the “vibe of the pirate stations and the new internet era” – remember this was in the mid-late 90s time of “cool britannia” where there was still that faint glimmer of hope the mainstream media would accept this, at least on the minority channels – and others like the Exodus collective were almost succesfully getting their messages across.
Whatever is said about media exposure on SJ I know for a fact that the documentaries Exodus made (Glenn Jenkins oversaw them as well as Alaistair Campbell did for NeoLabour) inspired people here to action as much as their parties; lots of people tuned into Rapture and stuff like Channel E probably keeps the grime scene going (at least until they all shoot each other!)

she was OK in 1987 though – I think she is still trying to do the same sort of presenting work to this day (when she can get it) and is probably in her 40s by now.
In the interests of equal opportunities I’d point out there are as many talentless male has-beens from the 80s who ought not to be on our TV screens either but are only there due to their connections or being able to buy a commission (face it, who the fuck would work with Chris Evans otherwise?)
this is the problem; as downsizing bites those who have got a foothold in the industry will not let go, no company wants to take a risk with new talent and the whole industry stagnates…
Apparently the bbc just “Downsized” by 3-5000 jobs – condolences to those people and their families. no chance of progression there.
cable tv might be interesting for testing the waters…dont actually have a telly, so only watch it when i visit friends who like it, or my parents’. still, doesnt matter, im at my mums right now watchin extreme sports (i say watchin’- its on)channel.
I take it you still mix- what style/ what rig etc?
All right i’ll accept that a long time ago she might possibly have been deemed fit by someone with bad eyesite, lets leave it at that (haha).
there were a million wanker blokes on sat tv. now there’s nothing but. why did anyone hire philip scofeild for kids tv? he looks like he’s been constructed from bran. and hes about as funny. On the other hand, Andi Peters was THE dude untill he presented with that emma bird who was constituated of chintz. He’s some big nob in the bbc now, running the doomed totp (relegated to sundays -result! oh no actually fuck off out my sunday!
funilly enuff I saw the extreme sports channel and even though I’m not that much into the sports themselves I rate it – did some research and found it was a particularly good example of a well-run niche channel. Curiously although based in the UK the content is TX’d from the Netherlands as presumably they couldn’t find a suitable or cost-effective playout centre in the UK
Sadly in my area there are no regional cable networks any more (you are looking at up to £250k to set one up – they guy who tried to do ours re-mortgaged a large house in Oxfordshire to do so and cashed in his pension (lost the whole fucking lot as well)
I still mix old-skool now and again but haven’t done so for ages….
