  • Bugging device found in UN room

The United Nations says it has found a bugging device in a room at its European offices in Geneva.
The revelation, first made on Swiss television, was confirmed in a statement by a UN spokeswoman.

She said the device was found recently during repairs to the French Hall, often used for video conferences with the UN headquarters in New York.

The room is reported to have been used by ministers from major powers last year during private talks on Iraq.

    Older device

The UN spokeswoman, Marie Heuze, said an inquiry had failed to determine who planted the device.

A Geneva-based security expert who saw photos of the device told Television Suisse Romande that the system appeared to be of Russian or Eastern European origin.

“It’s a very sophisticated piece of listening equipment where the sound is picked up and immediately retransmitted,” Surveillance Consulting Group head Patrick Daniel Eugster said, according to the Associated Press news agency.

Its size indicated it was three or four years old, he added.

There have been allegations in the past that senior UN officials were bugged during the run-up to the Iraq war by countries such as Britain and the United States.

Wasn’t there a story about kofi annan being bugged by british for the US govt a while ago? i think it was leaked by clair short, but no one liked her at the time, because she quit govt just when it made as little difference as poss. im sure the govt said “of course we do, what do you think we have spy’s for?” and that was the end of it…

It seems to fly in the face of democracy, that you can hear what ever the opposition is saying without using deplomacy. i felt so sorry for kofi, even tho the un’s as bent as a nine bob note, he did look pretty shocked and scared at the time.

at the same time, everyone patriotic seems to likes the idea of their govt spying, but not being spied on. thsi was evidenced in the attitude of news readers in the kofi affair. suddenly everyone got selfish and arrogant “yea we deserve to bug the un, coz we is GREAT Britain!”.

    spins me out.

apparently it´s the same in number 10 and the whitehouse… no-one expects conversations to be private
