• The new freedom of information act has come into force right accross the UK

    http://www.out-law.com/php/page.php?page_id=freedomofinformati1104930919&area=news
The Freedom of Information Act came into full effect on New Year’s Day, giving individuals for the first time the statutory right to see a massive amount of information held by Government departments and thousands of public bodies.

People have a right to information about the way decisions are made, and public money is spent, by more than 100,000 public authorities, including Government departments, schools, NHS Trusts, police forces and local authorities.
a lot of the blue light services and local authorities have actually been doing this in advance of the new year!

its worth checking their websites as a lot of stuff is already there for downloading and if not there are contact details showing how to get hold of it.

TBH I have been amazed at how open the emergency services have been, particularly the fire brigades (then again its a good way of passing on valuable training info to retained firefighters and showing people what is required to join the brigade), but there is also very good info on fire safety here!

The LAs also have quite a few council meetings minutes, much of this is fairly mundane but there are often references to unlicensed raves- sadly the prevailing opinion across the country seems to be “not enough is being done to stop them” – with no other alternatives (such as permitting low cost events!)

    while it’s definately good news…

I think a lot of the juicy bits will still be unavailable for whatever reason…

asking for access to minutes of cabinet meetings will elicit the response that only individuals rough notes are kept in mmany cases (tony’s ‘shirtsleeve approach apprently… or just another way to cover your tracks).

I’m waiting to see if the lord justice’s advice about the legality of the Iraq war will be made public (at last)
