a freind of mine who is a seventeen-eighteen year old lad was caught on friday in a stolen car. he refused to leave the vehicle and so was sprayed with cs gas at close range. he has chemical burns on his face as well as burns to his cornea.
my suggestion was to go to the local press, but somepeople seem to think that the police were within their rights. i’m sure this could be the case, but it doesn’t seem acceptable nontheless. there were three officers at the time he was sprayed, and he is a small skinny lad.
i’m not defending the theft for a second, but surely the reason we have police is so we dont have vigilante’s which seems to be these coppers m.o.
any advice would be appreciated.
first off let me just say that you dont know what your talkiing about, but thats not your fault. Police do not spray “cs gas” at people, they have either pepper spray or mace. It sounds like your friend got sprayed with mace which has been found to have some harmful effects, whereas pepper spray is totally harmless because it is in essence just cayenne pepper extract. cs is not actually a gas it a solid powder which can be put into the air which makes it seem like a gas, the military uses it to train troops on chemical gear. I am in the Army i have been exposed to cs a few times and trust me, although it is bad while youre exposed to it, after a few minutes in fresh air the effect will be completely gone. So, if you go the media saying that your friend recieved burns on his face from being sprayed by cs gas from the cops, they are probably going to laugh at you. The first question is did your friend see a doctor for his wounds? if he did then my advice would be to talk to a lawyer to see if their is anything you can do. If your friend didnt see a doctor, then theres really nothing you can do.
any advice would be appreciated.
AFAIK
as soon as you ‘resist arrest’ or ‘prevent an officer carrying out his duty’ or ‘pervert the course of justice’ you can be in a whole lot more shit than if you gave yourself up as soon as you get caught
by refusing to get out of the car he was creating a situation where there would have to be physical conflict to detain him
i think stirring this up could lead the OB to bring down these heavier charges as a response to any complaint
but I’m no lawyer
i think a lot of OB will dish out a nasty slap, especially to someone your mate’s age to serve as a deterrant, knowing how rarely any arrest comes to court or leads to a court handing down any punishment…
and TBH he’s lucky he wasn’t caught be me in my car
most old bill are now about the same age as we are; and yes they do have a vigilanté mentality. even if they start out as good cops they soon pick up this mindset. it happens particularly when they see people who are criminal scum get off from violent crimes or from disrupting others lives because of failings in the criminal justice system – and TBH I can understand why – I’d last about 3 months as a cop and probably end my career in Broadmoor if I had to see some of the scum that are on Britains streets walking free.
If the lad had any markers on his police computer record for violence or weapons, resisting arrest or is a regular class A drug users they will go in like this if he doesn’t comply and could justify doing so even in Court. He might be a little kid, but they can still do a lot of damage. Just ask city party organisers about that…. how do the cops know he doesn’t have a needle or even a gun in that car?
Also, society is just getting tired with others thinking they have the right to help themselves to property others have worked hard to obtain – even though “its only a car” IME car thieves usually nick vehicles belonging to younger people and often those with families, and worse still often destroy the vehicle after they have finished with it. Too many of my friends have lost vehicles that way – even at raves 😡
what globaloon says is correct.. and if there is no lasting damage from the substance (unlikely, look on the health section for more info) the only thing he could possibly get is some sort of settlement for “excessive force on arrest” with a good lawyer; even if he succeeded he would be well advised to just leave the area the incident happened in and use his money to drive legally ; the cops would be on his case for evermore.
i dont know what happened here, but imo any one involved in stealing cars deserves what the get. Why should someone work there arse of to pay for a car, only to have someone, take it and fuck it up?? im not having a dig at ure mate, like i said i don’t what happened, he may not have known it was nicked etc. its just i have worked my fuckin arse of in a part time job and going to college to buy my car, and if anyone nicked it i’d fucking castrate them with rusty spoon!! i think u need to look at why these ppl get involved in this kind of shit to sort it out, neway i’ll stop rambling on now!
yea, totally agree with the above, to be honest i dont know him that well, hes moe a freind of a freind whos come to all our parties. i was actually well shocked to find that he was out twocing, its not something i have any experience of appart for some of my mates have had their vehicles fucked with and robbed. its not on at all.
all i was trying to say was that the police seemed well excessively aggressive, as if you saw this kid, he is tiny, and he was alone. according to him the cops only asked him once to get out of the car, and he was shitting it coz hed been rumbled, so delayed responding, looked up and got a face full of pepper spray. while he is fine now, it doesnt seem appropriate behavior for figures of authority. i’m not sorry he got caught, just he was assaulted, which was unneccessary.

The police do use “cs gas” also known as O-chlororbenzyldene malontrite, it is standard issue to police forces throughout the uk and may also be known as “tear gas” when its exposed to a person it causes them severe eye irritation, a profuse flow of tears, severe skin irritation on moist parts of the body. and irritation to the upper respitory tract causing dificulty breathing. It would only be used at the officers descretion if he thaught it was absolutley essential. I will give you a real life example a male in the manchester area had assaulted his wife two officers in a patrol car tracked the suspect down and confronted him he then got the two officers on the floor they could not reach for the extendable baton so he told his partner to shut his eyes and they sprayed the suspect with gas and they did this because they thaught he was going to hit one of them he was then on the floor in pain screaming the other officer got spray on him due to the wind but this is better than a broken nose. This is the first time the officer has used it in three years. Also the officers would rather use the baton than the spray, they would only use the spray if there is threat to life, assault in progress or if the person commiting the crime is endangering life or is endangering his own. Your mate may have become violent they may not want to take the risk of one of them being injured for all they know he could have had a nife or any other weapon, they may have not wanted a persuit where someone could be killed on the road my veiw is the police where in there right when assesing the situation and took nessesery action at the time of the inccedent.
