they did it with real film and gramophone records – there’s a film from the war called “the lambeth goose step” which shows all the nazis goose-stepping in time to the Lambeth Walk (Spike Milligan used to insert it into his shows at random moments during the 1970s and 1980s)
and Spittting Image (produced in the days when ITV were a real TV company) always ended with a satirical song.
Most of the time they had to change the notes to avoid being sued – but when Sting heard they were changing “every breath you take” to “every bomb you make” he not only said it was OK but travelled to Central TV studios and did the singing himself.
