  • went to the party at tipi valley a few weeks ago and had a wicked time – lots of happy people, relatively few chavs, and a generally good old skool vibe.

took a few friends who underwent something of a conversion…

an american whose closest experience to an outdoor rave was a couple of us dancing around a boombox in the middle of a forest one night – she almost wet herself when she saw all these tipis and heard all that banging music in the wilds of wales! it was quite a revelation and if mike from offas dyke ever reads this (or someone knows him), she’s dying to see you again and carry on the conversation!

my sisters boyfriend who is a self-proclaimed guitar head and “hates” dance music was the biggest surpirse of all. i left him at 6am in the big tent, dancing his arse off and loving it. my sister has said that since that night he’s only listened to dance music and is reassessing the social scene in bristol!

don’t you just love it when that happens?

anyway, it was a great night and if anyone has any pics or stories of the night it’d be great to hear them…..

Yeah I was there! mentioned it on here but no one cared

It was great…took us hours to find it, only 15mins to get home tho. Got there about 8pm-ish and um think i spent most of the time in the big tent but went to the telly tuby house type chill out area first. Er I lost the abillity to stand so was on my knees in the corner by the bar thing in the big tent for a while…um then i somehow ended up in my tent at about 6ish. Sounds really boring but it was the best time i’ve ever had. I’ve been to the valley a few times but not for a while and dunno why but yeeah…

I took my bro too, he’d never been to one before and used to be all anti-rave scene and music, but not any more… I’d never seen him so happy and he’s been in a good mood since :biggreen:

I look forward to the next one up there!

    i definately cared

i couldn’t make it :hopeless: but i’d love to hear about what you found

    Yey! :bounce_fl hehe
Well there where um 5 rigs… all where covered I think…hmm
the big one was massive and really er. red and yellow and had seating around the edge and in the middle. I can’t really remember much about the rest, but there where a few of those fire people, think I saw a really tall wizzard, a bride and a priest that kinda scared me a bit… :hopeless: Loadsa little fires and fireworks. Wish I’d remembered to take some pics :mkay:
    Anyone got any?

    mmm… memories :cloud9:

sounds like you had a good time too amelia! what’s it been like the other times you’ve been? it was quite busy that night – a full field you could say

we started a small fire and i kept it alight all night – it was a definate bonus – but with the fire pits in the tipis there was plenty of warmth to go around!
although, having a fire going certainly drew some interesting characters in – its amazing what people will give you when you share the warmth with them and offer them a cup of tea!!

so we both don’t have any photos and i’ve got no idea what rigs were there even – some drum and bass that was right next to my tent and kept my body moving even when i did catch a little shut eye… some progressive housey stuff in the main tent that wasn’t quite my cup of tea…some cool and random beats from the telly tubby chill out area….

anyway – somebody else on this site must have gone there…..surely…..
be good to hear some more stories…..

Mmm it was good the other times i went but i wasn’t the most confident then so just spent most of the time wondering around making sure I wasn’t on my own, bit silly now that I think what I could have been doing  Yeah there where alot more people than there usually are at their parties, noticed they where charging £5 for cars, but i’ve never had a car to take so can’t remember if they usually do that or if they expected more this time…but I wasn’t really worried about that amazingly hehe.

Hmm I think I walked past your fire a few times… our tent was by the Telly tubby thing and yeah I was still moving to tha music in my breif sleep too. :weee:

I know a few people on here that went…where’s your stories Aaah!

Think I basically repeated what you just said, I feel silly :crazy_fre 😛

sounds like an excellent party – and possibly perfectly legal!

not sure about the status of Tipi Valley but it appears to be a “hippy” site where people live in home-built eco-friendly buildings, and are tolerated and accepted by wider society, whether or not they have the actual freehold or title to the land (which they may do….). I remember reading about a similar place in North Wales….

the CJA can only be invoked if local residents claim they have been seriously distressed by the event – in this case the residents have asked for the “rave-type disco” (as the authorities call these things) to be there and given permission, and if its in a valley the sound isn’t going to bother anyone else; so there’s no offences committed!

whoever permits these events would have to be careful they do not inadvertantly break the PEL laws though ; try to keep it as a private/invite event, and I would not shout about it too much on here in advance (by all means talk about the party afterwards though!)

charging for cars could be dodgy – OTOH if its a private party given the nature of the site they could always claim that the event was primarily intended this was done deliberately to discourage too many people using motorised transport and to encourage locals to ride their bikes there (would perhaps be “challenging” terrain 😉 )

one thing I would suggest is that they don’t let this event get too big…. if it becomes a “honeypot” for the English rigs as well it may flood the valley with extra traffic, chavs and then the heddlu will be on the case of the valleys residents…

pity no one has pics though, we have to be wary of putting up any English unlicensed party pics now because cops may use them as evidence, so it would have been good to see this event in our gallery!

Yep, I totally agree with you and yes, they do own the site and have done for dacades I think. There is a house or two not far from the site but they just join in, think I met the owners once..hmm. I’ve met a few people that have lived there, but not really spoken much of what it’s like to be there permanently…but I intend to for my own personal interest more than anything. There where definatly alot more cars than the last few times i’ve been there, that caused more hastle getting everyone sorted….so eveyone seemed more than willing (not suprisingly) to pay the £5.
I’ll be up there again soon-ish so I’ll be sure to get some pics this time :weee:

well, said “challenging terrain” caused the exhaust to fall off my car – gutting – but I had such a good time that it was all incidental. cycling to tipi valley would be a strain on most lungs, but if i’d thought about it sooner i would have parked much further away and hiked the rest of the way in. – it would have been good exercise and I would saved myself £80 for a new exhaust!

tipi valley has been around for quite a while and I spoke to a number of people that night who were either former or current residents – seems like there’s a nice crowd there with a sense of social and environmental responsibility. anyway, you can read an account of tipi valley in george mckay’s book “senseless acts of beauty” – as a “temporary autonomous zone” (or rather, a permanent autonomous zone) its received a lot of interest.

gutted about the pics!! it looked so cool – it was beautifully decorated that night and seeing so many people huddled in tipis around the fire pits was a lovely sight and i’m sad that i’d used up all the pics on my disposable camera before i got there – too busy taking pics of dolphins earlier that day in cardigan 🙂

anyway – wales is my favourite place ever and going to tipi valley and meeting the community there is enough to make you reassess your life on a permanent basis.
wish i was back there now. i miss home so much 🙁

amelia – next time your off to a tipi valley party or any other in that general region we’ll have to try to meet up. would be nice to meet people in real life from this forum!

    Hi folks
I’ve lived at tipi valley since 1984 in tipis mostly, but now in a 20 foot thatched roundhouse.
I was involved in putting on the party and was responsible for the Dubpram (see http://www.dubpram.co.uk for pics.) selling hot drinks and playing dub and house groove (Ben Watt/Buzzin Fly a current fave!).
We’ve been doing parties up in the Valley for years but this was perhaps the best and the biggest.
Tipi Valley is very much a village that works quite intuitively. The land is owned collectively, individually and by small groups of people, the majority held by trustees in the Tipi Valley Land Fund. Also in the 30 years that people have been here we have bought all the houses imeadiately adjacent to the Valley.
We have quite an extended party family throughout the area and it all pulled together for this gig. Some residents who are Krishna conscious arranged for the 20 foot tall statue of Jaganath (lord of parties and the Universe) to adorn the centre of the main marquee.(Someone here also runs a marquee hire company). Others put together the D& B tent, sorted the lighting, firewood etc.
The chill bender was a new one for the Valley and thanks to Jamuna, Shane and Carl for getting it together.
True wot has been said about it getting too big/well known etc. We are playing it cool. Ther will be parties next year at the Valley so keep your ear to the ground. (For She surely Sings!)

I don’t have any pictures of this party but there is one of a previous one showing the D & B tent and the rainbow Biglodge on the pictures forum. Also one of the Party field looking east towards the Brecon Beacons.
