the girl who wrote this is the most popular Internet artist in the Chinese speaking world!
Surreal lyrics though even if you did want to write a song in Chinese about a pig (and why not, it is a respected and popular animal there).
I think something may have been lost in the translation.
and who says the cultura revolution stifled creativity?
that song is so bad it makes me want to shit.
I found quite a few references to the tune on sites made by Chinese youth who also write in English (unfortunately I cannot read blogs in Chinese (maybe when I am 50 I might have learnt a bit more).
I got the impression the whole phenomenon was a joke a bit like “all your base are belong to us” – even the Chinese think its a cheesy tune. its intended as a novelty song.
TBH much Chinese pop music is cheesy and manufactured but no different from Western pop of the early 1980s (although its written in Chinese). There are underground music scenes but just like here it is heavily suppressed using both armed police and the same laws used in the UK (such as the Malaysian rave being busted!)
it may even be popular because youths in Malaysia and other countries outside Asia where English is also more commonly spoken also want to learn their ancestral language and the simple lyrics are easy to remember…
Wikipedia is a good way of learning characters though; look carefully at the left hand side of the character for “pig” (enlarge the text size) and you will see the (rather thin) pig there!
