  • This animation depicts a proposed weapon with a one megaton yield. The funding for this weapon was cut in 2005 defense appropriations. However, the United States still has a B61-11 nuclear ‘bunker buster’ in its arsenal which has a 400 kiloton yield, which could still cause hundreds of thousands of deaths and spread radiation to other countries.

the Pentagon only cut the funding because there are plenty of left over missiles from the Cold War, the B61-11 is a re-engineered version of one of thses. seems like the World still has the nuclear threat to worry about and there has been absolutely zero progress since the 1980s….

I think we’re closer to it than ever baring the Cuban crisis…

yep – OTOH I don’t actually any nuclear engagement will be the armageddon style nuclear war that we were worried about in the 1980s but a couple of missiles being deployed in a disputed territory and a level of destruction/environmental damage equivalent to Chernobyl…

this will then actually push humankind towards a more sustainable lifestyle as continued survival will be dependent on it (due to contamination of oil reserves and a serious deterioriation of international relations) but it just seems ludicrous that things are getting to such a level…

The US’s pushing working hard towards the armement of space including the use of nuclear weapons, pundits are saying there’s a chance of an arms race in space…

yep – the still ongoing Star Wars programme from the 80s.

Incidentally were you aware that the IBM PC was originally meant to be an intelligent console terminal for the control systems for the original Star Wars project?

It was only because Apple and others (the CP/M machines) had shown there was a civillian/consumer market for smaller computers that IBM created a “fast track development” team to convert this project into a personal computer for civillian/business use..

this is also allegedly why PC cases were always beige until very recently; as that was the colour that the Pentagon specified..

I agree with you to an extent; but I don’t think the entire world will actually be destroyed – it would be a similar situation to world war II where there was only limited use of nuclear weaponry – but given the current theatres of war the ultimate result may be a paradox where the war destroys and contaminates the area and resources which were being fought over.. (i.e the Middle Eastern oil fields).

The result probably wouldn’t be global Armageddon; but a perhaps permanent regression of international relations – hardly surprising as East and West would be separated by a contaminated “no-mans land…”

conventional trade routes between the West and China/India would be blocked by contamination (plus these nations would be extremely angry at the fallout cloud, and demand reparations) – or the trade routes would reform through a “New Soviet Bloc”…. I expect the USSR would re-form with the help of CN and IN as this area would now control a lot of the Worlds resources but there would be more “anti-Western” feeling.

There would undoubtedly be a global economic recession as a result of all this; and perhaps civil disturbances in a number of countries as people in multicultural communities blamed each other.

I expect the “survival skills” may be more a manner of being able to re-use and recycle existing materials, practical construction/engineering skills and perhaps being able to live without “luxuries” as international trade/travel/communications would be curtailed.

(nukes fuck up satellite communications by electromagnetic pulses – goodbye internet or at least easy cheap comms outside the EU.)

A world conflict of this nature with a limited nuclear exchange has the potential to knock Britain back to the 1950s/60s but not destroy it altogether…and Government/bureaucracy will not just endure (government plans every day for Doomsday) but become stronger in the post war regeneration period (the 1950s were the beginning of the British “nanny state”)

I have this nasty feeling that there are people in power and particularly Middle Englanders who are prepared to take this risk, and it would give nationalists a lot of what they actually wanted…

OTOH for many people though it may feel like it wasn’t worth surviving.
