there have been some media reports that the British govt is considering introducing airport security screening accoring to ethic origin (read: persecution for travelling while Asian)

bearing this in mind, in the recent climate of extreme security in London’s airports, I thought it was interesting that my white (but non-british) wife was allowed to enter the country through a London airport with a foreign passport that has broken during the journey; the ID page had become detatched from the passport and the photo was sliding around inside the detached, laminated page

I’m pleased, obviously, that the immigration service allowed some leaway and were kind enough to overlook this, so that she could come ‘home’ from visiting her family

but I wonder what would have happened if her skin was a different colour?

I think your quite right to wonder this….
its frighteningly worrying the way things are heading,

If this is to be adopted it reinforces and goes hand in hand with racist / hate breeding organisations and gives them strenght to continue to spout and miseducate others of their hatred

A friend of of a friend, who is muslim was coming bak from visting family in syria the evening of the terrorist arrests and found himself in a 1 hour interrigation about why he was coming bak from syria, although he was just visiting family this wasnt taken into consideration, and he was asked questions about how he felt about terrorism etc.

this has happened since 9/11 anyway and isn’t confined to Britain by any means.

A young British Asian going to an Eastern country will actually get quizzed twice; by the immigration/border security/cops of the country he is visiting; then also on return to the UK.

A relative of mine who came here to study from Malaysia was quizzed for an hour by HM Immigration about what he planned to do in Britain (in fact it was to study in college and work for the NHS, which he still does). This was long before 7/7 or any other terrorist problems.

I do think though there is going to be “function creep”; particularly as people become more used to and accepting of surveillance and monitoring.

A lot of people (both the terrorists and the right wing have a lot of common ground) wanted scares like this to happen as they have hated multiculturalism and political correctness from day one and people with those views who have a bit of power will definitely try to use it.

There is clearly going to be a lot more monitoring and enforcement of the borders of sovereign nations.

Not only will all immigrants be subjected to stronger scrutiny; I expect people of all backgrounds will be judged on their destinations (i.e someone travelling to or from Ibiza would be suspected of maybe carrying drugs etc)

BTW I’d advise anyone irrespective of ethnicity to be extremely careful about what they may be carrying in their luggage this holiday season
or for that matter on the street when passing through key transport interchanges such as stations.

The current terrorist threat will eventually peter out for a few months; but the cops and searches will remain; they tend to turn up few terrorists (there aren’t that many) but plenty of careless people with drugs…

And if people whinge about the effect of these x-ray machines, the social conservatives will point out “we have a permissive society where people can be seen naked all the time and some indeed chose to flaunt their nudity or semi-nudity in public – so its a small price to pay for not being blown up…”

this total loss of privacy and surrender to a global nanny state is the price we will all pay if people worldwide refuse to sort out their differences other than by violence and war..
