really pleased to see this
Farmers ‘force’ McDonald’s out
A McDonald’s restaurant in a Devon town is closing because it cannot compete with local traders, say campaigners.
The company said “trading patterns” in Tavistock had changed over recent years and the site was no longer suitable.
In a statement, McDonald’s said it would try to move 27 staff employed at the restaurant to branches in Plymouth.
The restaurant, which opened in 1999, will close on Saturday while Tavistock farmers’ market thrives with a prestigious food award.
‘Quality food’
The market was voted the best in the region by Country Life magazine and won the title Best Food Town in the South West this year.
John Taylor, Tavistock Forward and EatWise chairman, said: “It just goes to show that the food is so good here we have seen them off.
“Because of the quality of our local food, McDonald’s has not been able to compete. I think there is definitely a link.
“We have made every effort to make Tavistock a haven for local food and McDonald’s wasn’t local food, so they suffered.”
A McDonald’s spokesman said: “With 1,250 restaurants across the UK, it’s essential that we continue to have the right restaurants in the right places.
“Since the restaurant opened in 1999, the trading patterns of Tavistock high street have changed and as a result we have taken the difficult decision to cease trading at this site.”
best part of it there is absolutely fuck all that Ronald Mcdonald can whinge about as this victory was all achieved via the free market….
OTOH whats the population distribution like there? the bulk of the anti-junk food backlash in this country comes from Middle England as they can afford to buy the good/organic stuff or have the time to prepare it (compared to a single mother with 4 kids for instance…)
Could it also be the case that the population in that area is “greying” (as they have forced out their younger people due to housing prices) and that is why a McDonalds is no longer a commercial success?
there is a fairly aged population, but also around 2000 school kids and a bunch of younger commuting families
getting ronald to bend over is a good feeling, whatever the circumstances IMO :weee:

are there cafés/restaurants selling the local British produce at a reasonable price taking the place of MacDs?
I’m definitely interested in whats going on out there as it could be a model for East Anglia as well..
i think it’s mainly the market where people can get a nice meat pie for a couple of quid that’s getting all the trade
they recently opened a Mac Ds in my local ASDA store which i think is a bit naughty. you can imagine all the kids who go shopping with their parents kicking up a fuss for a happy meal. plus it replaced the cafe they had their which done a nice fry up:get_you:
That’s the best news I have heard all day.:laugh_at:

RESULT! what a quality bit of news. farmers market beats maccy d’s! absolutely quality. now if that could only be replected….unforuneatly it doesnt look like the tide flows the same way in the rest of the country.
although i’m chuffed to say my own hometown has still held off the macd’s spectre. i spose theres gotta be some benefits to being a conservative stronghold…they dont hold with that “modern rubbish”.. not often i agree with the tories!
oh, stax: ASDA is just as bad as mcdonands anyway, so it doesnt make a difference. im not suprised they kicked out the local fry up in exchange for a multinational..thats their MO.
yer i know what ya sayin just think its blatently aimed at the kids(but isnt mac donalds anyway)
probably due to the pies..
2 quid for a decent quality meat pie (as opposed to the nasty mass-produced ones with a small quantity of meat worse than cat food that are a blight on this nation) is easily affordable by most and competitive with Macdonalds.
OTOH most other farmers’ markets I have encountered, although they sell quality produce, do so at a premium price and pitch their business at the middle classes, selling products that require longer preparation time..
raaaraaaraaaraaaWahay!! Tavistock 1 ronald 0
The BK in aber has gone bust!! is this a trend forming? I always buy my munch from the local butchers they do either a pork an aplle bap or a breakfast roll for £2 and its stacked. All local produce too.
small victories are great :weee:
