“Squatting is still legal, and a viable alternative to those looking to improve their situation in housing. Further, many folks squat to make a space available for community resource…”

Squatting is a great way of turning empty spaces into living spaces, at the moment me and few other are looking to squat somewhere around the guildford area, anyone interested?

    Hello Anarkismo,
My name is gabriela dworecki. I am Brasilian but ive been living in Madrid, heading over to london this year.
I am writing a script for a short loud and infectious documentary about squatting with the purpose of making it a free zone, away from the bottled options available, with all the crap that goes with it.
I saw your post. You would be a nice person to talk to if you are involved.
    Tell me about it!
    cheers:laugh_at:

I am not really that involved with squatting, i have stayed in a few squats but never on a permanent basis. Me and a few others are looking to squat a house for the purpose of a living space. There are a few squatted social centres in london but the police seem to be cracking down on squatting and have been closing them down recently.

People to talk to about this would be the Advisory Service for Squatters(http://www.squatter.org.uk/), once a week theyre at the 56a Info Shop (http://www.56a.org.uk) in Elephant and Castle but cant remember when.

Also the London Action Resource Centre (http://www.londonarc.org/) would be a good place to check out aswell.

    Hope this helps you out.

I’m from that area (Woking) and have been thinking about the same thing. Spoke to a couple of people but it didn’t amount to much. Let me know if your still interested and we can share some ideas.

    Cheers

if you’re squatting these days you have to be a lot more discreet/careful – squats have got a very bad name nowadays as crack dealers and pimps have recently discovered the joys of “squatters rights”.

Don’t noise up the entire street with late-night activity etc nor be blatant about drug use (i.e don’t flash it about in the garden or by windows, same as anywhere else) or you will be evicted within days on the grounds of “anti-social behaviour”

be careful of viglilanté types as well – often they are locals angry you are getting a “free ride” rather than building owners (ironically, IME this problem is more common on “council/social housing” areas than richer areas!)

that said a a well-run squat still gets little hassle from the locals / neighbours, even if they may not wholly agree with what you are doing, and commercial premises that are unwanted/due to be knocked down can often be used for some months.

Most squats only last aslong as it takes the owner to find out and to get you evicted through the courts. This is why it’s normally better to find a house belonging to the council as often the council can be sympathetic and let you stay there until they need to use it which can be any amount of time, saying this though it’s guildford council so i dont think this is going to be the case.

If it is private owned the longer you keep the owner in the dark the longer you are going to be there. Although recently all empty houses that owners have no interest in using are attracting the interest of property developers for building expensive housing for a quick buck. If this is the case then you’re going to be evicted pretty damn quick. Nothing stands in the way of profit, not even the need for housing.

Benjo i’ll get in touch with you bout sorting one out. Will probably be better to meet in person at some point with other people that are interested, lot more gets done this way than talking over the internet

    check this…
i heard from a pal i work with that a norfolk party peoples squat not one house, but half the street. and whats more, theres an elderly lady living right slap bang in the middle-and the story goes she claimes she’s never felt more safe in her entire life.
i mean imagine-a small army of overly friendly pilled up folks making you cups of tea, doing the washing up and doing the garden at god knows what time in the morning!
    sounds ace!

Sounds very strange to me

Then again if the old lady is nuts (no offence to any old people) as they usually are, she will love the people who are different.

I am actually suprised though that she has not moaned about hair cuts, the clothes they wear raaa

hmm – where is this? (PM me if you want)

unfortunately I think your mate may be overidealistic or talking about something that happened a while back.

I am aware there are some squats linked to East Anglian ravers but they usually get evicted quite quickly. with property prices down here increasing and this area becoming more desirable especially to people escaping “Londonistan”.

I doubt if an entire street would be able to be simply taken over like that without someone complaining, even if the people there are nice to an old lady (I have no reason to doubt this).

If the place does still exist its probably a single large shared house or about two or three terraces with an old lady living next door, whose partner/relatives have long since passed away so she is glad of the company and it would be better for her than having empty buildings next door which would attract criminals.

well in all honesty my tale features nothing seen by my own eyes, so it may all be bollocks, but the me pal wouldnt say it unless he didnt see (him chat no shit, y’see!)
i did only say half the street (pedantic it is to correct you i know!), but even this seems slightly ambitious. who knows?
plus i bet the ol’ girl smoked weed!

err….. is this in norwich?? (PM it if ya want) lived in norfolk all my life and no a few rig related squats bt never heard of a little party commune in the city! does sound fat but fairly unrealistic considerin a few squats hav had to be moved recently..

Does anyone know of a free room in a squat in the North London (archway) area. Or would anyone like to help set one up in Woking/Guildford area.
