A drugs charity is to launch a new helpline to cater for addicts within the Jewish and Muslim faiths.

    Good!

Its true, drug use in minority communities is very undercover, If someone in a muslim family for instance becomes a heroin addict, the family usually will either oust them or cover it up as much as possible. Hence these users dont access drug services, or when they do they are at rock bottom.

I know in Hackney we have in addition to our CDT a seperate service for muslim, asian and another for turkish users. All have staff from that ethnicity that speak the language.

There are enough barriers as there are in the ‘users world’

This can only be a good thing..

I’m mixed on this one, its true that the Muslim comunity had a big problem with Heroin within its male youth. But the comunity like everything else hides the fact and sweeps it under the carpet.
Maybe drugs agencys and charitys should address this fact and encorage young muslim men to come forward for help rather than setting up another divisive stratagy?
Saying that I helped myself in the end and got clean my own way because all drugs agencys are useless.

    it makes sense doing this…

I’m Asian (but not Muslim) and there is a big cultural disapproval of recreational drug use (or any form of hedonistic lifestyle) anyway amongst British Asians…but it means they become better at being more devious about it often until their use becomes really problematic..

A particular risk with the Muslim community is that young men are often sent by their familes back to their ancestral nations for “re-education”.

This is where many get recruited by criminal gangs or even terrorist/extremist organisations.

All these problems have been brewing up since the 90s but no one seemed to be doing anything about it – addressing this issue is something drugs charities should have done years ago.

This is a great idea for all –
our local CDAT has a specific ‘asian lead nurse’ as our local community do not seem to seek its help and rather keep it hidden in the family due to the percieved stigma or send ‘them’ abroad (cold turkey style) or ‘fund the drug use’ to keep it hidden.

But the same goes for our local ‘travelling’ community- there is a huge percieved stigma attatched and a huge number or men and women using a variety of drugs and alcohol at problematic levels, that end up finally seeking help through the prison referal system as it tends to end up going that far before the ‘problem’ is addressed/ accepted.
