There’s sepculation about Google coming up with a version of second life…

    http://www.webmasterworld.com/rv4.cgi?f=30&d=3235828&url=http://play.tm/story/9065

hadnt even seen second life before, looks mental.

these virtual worlds are interesting concepts from a technical POV but I am really concerned about their wider social impact. IMO they are now getting people used to accepting a more controlled, mundane lifestyle provided they have access a computer and internet connection….

Peoples desire for rebellion and alternative ideas to life is being disspated by these computer games (I think they are a lot more different than normal computer games as most of us don’t spend our weekends in reality fighting world war III in urban combat, nor flying planes or even spaceships and hunting aliens)

I’m reading about people 10 years my junior who can’t be bothered to go to raves despite having access to cars and spare time/money, and it usually ends up with everyone sat in front of those poxy consoles and computer games

the original 90s cyber-culture was all about using the networks to enhance our social lives, and to use the technology to take back a bit of time and energy from the large organisations to use for real social events, now they are wrestling the power away from us..

I recently became a member of second life but mainly to look into broadcasting music in to / through the clubs they have there! Its fascinating from a business angle that you can buy and sell space or things you have created and exchange the money for reall cash….this could be big business in the future.

I registered ages ago and dont really have time to spend on it as I want to play with music and have to much to sort in my real life at the moment rather than create another one!

A few years ago I got into Worlds which is another virtual world and saw how addictive they are, the friend who introduced me to second life doesnt come off it at the moment. Although I think there is a ‘honeymoon’ period when a lot of people spend all there time on there, and then realise they forgot about the real world.

I think its good to meet people from around the world and use it for what you want but dont get hooked because too many of us are getting socialy inept and need to keep it real! :weee:

yea ive been on it now, and its a bit tacky, the tech hasnt casught up yet, it looks like a 90’s game with no shadows etc..

i too was interested in setting up a permenant rave site where people could come and listen to my mates tunes and watch my videos (you can stream to vid screens inside apparently). is a mission to work out, tho, well tech. cant help feeling its somethign i should get in on the ground floor of tho, it is the future of the net imo.

went o radio one’s island where theyre having a virtual music fest soon, loooked mad. ive seen what game slike this can do to people, one of my mates is a slave to net games. sad to see, so im not sure i want to go there. so interesting tho. i got a salad fingers t-shirt for my character! my little bros mate made that animation, someone in america liked the design, stuck in on a v-t-shirt and gave it to me! wierd communication of ideas, but quite exciting.

always wanted to make my own content for online games, now i can. but i prolly wont. there a certain degree of geekiness i try not to cross.
