  • I’ve added some adsense banners which will display only to users who aren’t subscribers or staff, and only at the bottom of thread pages excluding certain forums which google’s t&c’s prohibit (ie: drugs & dating / sex). It’s an experiment so let me know what you think.

I’ve also found a sponsor (enjoy party pills) willing pay to have their logo at the bottom of the forum home page and mentioned in our outgoing email. Again this is an experiment…

And banners are now refreshing every two minutes as well without having to reload the page although we only have 3 running at the moment.

Would be interested in what your CTR is. Ive found that whever i tried to monetise Level 1 with adsense the CTR was poor. Good luck with the experiment.

I do a lot of work with adsense so let me know if you wanna cross compare stats etc..

Butu does not object! Butu loves rave, but he knows we have to pay for all this malarkey somehow….

    (sorry… getting carried away there)

seriously though the ads don’t look too obtrusive and TBH is people are putting up with worse on murdochspace I don’t see them being an excessive problem here…

However as SdZ pointed out many people may not click them (TBH I see these everywhere and have never clicked one)

The “robot” thing seems to have a sense of humour though; check the ads that came up at the bottom of the “where is SJ?” thread…

From what ive learned a lot of people think theres a smartpricing filter going on. This means that if your site as a whole has a low CTR its more likely you will only ever get the bottom feeders of the advertising pile, low CPC. You might find that you will need to setup different channels, one for each forum perhaps, and then drop the ads from forums that have the worse CTR’s. This could increase your overall earnings and with less ads.

seems like a cunning plan. I assume CTR means “click-through ratio?”

lol, so the guy actually exists then? (would make sense as the name seems to be associated with the East of England)

Your feedback you have would be appreciated, I had a notion you were knowledgable about Adsense from a former post of yours. Anyway although we’re displaying their ads to a pretty narrow focus because they’re not on all pages, they’re not in our archive (which tends to the best place for them I think) and I’ve kept them off the gallery as well, I still think it’s worth trying. Especially because no one revenue stream will pay all the bills but they do add to a reasonable contribution which matters…

CTR = Click through rate, measured as a percentage. Level 1 was at most 2-3% from what i remember but i never really tried that hard tbh.

CPC = Cost per click, measured in currency. I found that i was only getting the lower costing clicks of 5-10 cents. I have other sites though that can get clicks of over a dollar, usually relating to finance, gambling, health.

DrB you may find that the health forum would do the best but its best to setup channels and watch the stats….

Re: Butu: yes hes very really, a bit of a joker but nice guy really. Hes local to me and parties down here still afaik. Those pics of the protest where it all started show him there.

I value your opinion on these things Alex, I’m glad you approve and yes, nice dig at the oiks…

Thanks, what about a channel for each main forum (ie: main, general and parties)?

Yes definatly. I would recommend this so you can refine your ad placement. Google wants partners with high CTR’s and serves better paying ads to these sites. Essentially more ads usually doesnt equal more money. Drop the ads from channels which dont convert to clicks and concerntrate on expanding on the ones that do.

I think its worth having a separate one for the health/lifestyle forum as well.

the reason being (as SdZ hinted at) the advertisers are gonna see opportunities to sell personal healthcare products as a result of discussions and perhaps other stuff

for instance someone may be feeling rubbish after a weekends raving and they – want to make themselves better/detox etc and thats when people want all the supplements/vitamins..

also there are lots of girls (and probably a few blokes even!) on here who may be interested in cosmetics/fashion etc…

OTOH I think the robot doesn’t understand rave that well if you go by the sort of ads coming up – it clearly “thinks” many of the forums are about commercial clubbing…

Thanks – BTW I hope people don’t think I’ve suddenly become a “marketing type” but I think if we do this I agree with SdZ that its worth setting this up to deliver the least amount of ads for the most cash…

any online record stores want to advertise, do you think?

I’m pretty good mates with the Stay up forever crew.. i could see if they fancy advertising on here?

Its from that demonstration after the essex rave bust.

The people who ahd turned up had the worst placards ever with slogans such as “rave 4 evr” painted in black on a yellow bakground and one person had written “but u love raves”. There wasn’t enough space so it all got squashed into “BUTU LOVE RAVES”.

    Hence BUTU was born.
