hmm – I suspect this is more possibly a cock-up rather than conspiracy…
on TV news, many “talking heads” with what looks like live action behind them are in fact in the studio with a yellow background behind them (sometimes mocked up to look like windows) – the footage is “keyed” over this solid colour using various video mixing techniques…
this is regularly used in lieu of putting a reporter or camera crew into a dangerous situation, particularly with news organisations wishing to cut costs…
Except Auntie couldn’t get the correct footage or communications breakdowns led to inaccurate pictures being transmitted behind the talking head..
Even many regional news shows now do this, such as the ones where you have two reporters and it looks like there is a window behind them and a view of the local area (the current Anglia news or the old “London Tonight”) are examples of this.
Many stations originally did used to use a real local landscape but stopped doing this in the 90s – the windows were replaced by solid yellow boards and the live footage replaced by delayed footage from a “roof-cam” on top of the news studio – often in order to prevent activists hijacking broadcasts by unveiling banners in view of the windows behind the news studio.
