Found this a minute ago. official reason from OB why raves are illegal!
That looks like it was a proper phatty before the old bill came and ruined the fun!
i went to this one, was in north london, psytrance party, well good music, shit soundsystem, beautiful forest, loved it, had my first pill there, had my first MDMA their, and had my first 2CB going to it, fucking quality
so caring towards others efforts there 😉
Root compaction! Phah…
For natural compaction on a geologic scale, see compaction (geology); for consolidation near the surface, see Consolidation (soil).
Soil compaction occurs when weight of livestock or heavy machinery compresses soil, causing it to lose pore space. Affected soils become less able to absorb rainfall, thus increasing runoff and erosion. Plants have difficulty in compacted soil because the mineral grains are pressed together so as to leave little space for air and water, which are essential for root growth. Burrowing animals also find a hostile environment, because the denser soil is more difficult to penetrate.
The ability of a soil to recover from compaction depends on climate, mineralogy and fauna. Soils with high shrink-swell capacity, such as Vertisols, recover quickly from compaction where moisture conditions are variable (dry spells shrink the soil, causing it to crack). But clays which do not crack as they dry cannot recover from compaction on their own unless they host ground-dwelling animals such as earthworms — the Cecil soil series is an example.
i wonder if thats an argument when glasto, the carling festivals and others are being put through the mill to get licences re-newed
why you say phah? root compaction kills trees.
i think that thet may have used it as an excuse in this case but doesn’t mean its not an actual problem
they aren’t in woodland areas, they are on commercial farm land, and a significant proportion of ticket money goes back into creating drainage, building tracks etc etc
as far as root compaction goes… that is right, it kills woodland. it’s interesting that when the person holding the camera starts filming the woodland manager, who is giving a totally reasonable explanation of why he thinks the party is a bad idea, they wander off
What about the probably quite large number of visitors to forests every year. Surely they do more damage than one night’s event in a localised area?!
Its my understanding that managing woodland/forests includes (where and when they have the money) dealing wth root compaction along frequently used paths/areas etc.
They have these big long pneumatic air drills – you stick a big hollow spike deep into the ground and blow a big bang of air into it to lossen up th soil, takes ages.
this was all highlighted (again only my understanding) after that hurricane in 1987, loads of trees that survived the night ended up flourishing. When they tried to figure out why they discovered it was because the trees had been wrenched about so much that it had loosened up the entire root systems and the trees loved it. So now they do this to help.
I like to party but I also think that respecting the areas we party in is the right way to go, its logical sense to appreciate the effect the noise and presence of so many people have isnt it? We clean up in a lot of cases but surely its still worth looking a the bigger picture
I should get out more…
