    yes.

the military, and the emergency services.

MS is being really crafty and trying to get the techie/geek community to help develop and test-drive a portable surveillance/monitoring system which can then be pitched to the uniformed services (especially as there would be intense competition from embedded linux-based solutions which would probably be way more reliable..)

which will be legal for them to use when the commons passes the legislation and no-one cares/notices ‘cos the papers are still rambling on about muslim extremism or paris hilton.

    for fucks sake.:hopeless:

its already legal for the the Police to use such technology. They already use cameras attached to cars, bicycles, their custodian helmets and body armour, even dogs.

Its also legal for private citizens to deploy surveillance equipment against one another and many already do (lots of private and businesses have CCTV)

What MS (and I expect others) are looking into isn’t the cameras as such (the Japanese are better at making them anyway) but creating a box that can store large quantities of multimedia and be triggered without having to press loads of buttons or deal with complicated software.

The same box (particularly if it were an open source project) could be just as useful to private citizens and also for non sinister purposes – think about how handy it would be to capture photos, DJ sets, videos etc)

technology itself is neutral, its just the way it is used (or marketed).

One person may use a mobile phone to get to a rave, another may use it to grass on a drug deal in progress.

Yep, this is very true. I agree 100% with what you say here.

It is not the technology i don’t ‘trust’ at the end of the day… it is MS!!! – Well, them and most other big multinational companies. MS are one of the ones i trust the least I have to say!

Still, never mind, if their technology starts to take over the world too much it will be okay, as at some point it will “encouter a fatal error and need to close”

Yeah there are people who do this, their memory is stored forever and sent into space. It is part of a brain net. yeh its true. very sad. but i will never back up my brain. i like forgetting things. the human is 1000000000 times smarter than the computer.

    Back to rule nr.1;

All info/comunication done or proceded by eletronical device should be treaten as open information and for all to read or monitor…..or you be might be sorry later on, an “inocent” joke or coment could end up on your secret dossiere or on next job interview wich you need a securityclearance to get(the job)….privacy is long gone history, and it is as easy to maintain as playing football with to left legs……

Crap innit? Would like a dozen of EMP bombs just sort out a register or two for christmas….(searchlight on me now…bomb, terror, masstransit, etc cocktail of words that will turn on the orange/red light somwhere “over there”)

As long I have been on the leftist politicalscene my awernes of surveilance of all kind has been high, and taken allways in consideration when it comes to use of electronical
comunication or normal conversations, . We had a big secret police scandal in norway going all the way from WWII to 91-92, where people like my self(at that time I was full time nonviolent actionist/activist) was illegally monitored…..so when people say; oh, the democratic system will never abuse priv info, I say Bullshit! Look to germany and their bedreiptsverbot(crap spelling)=banned to do the job you know or banned from your proffesion, guilty by assocation, was enough….

So when private enterprises like MS want to be my back up brain, I know what time it is and I am gone! Rember that the private sector is not founded on laws…..only profit….

The only occations I need a back up my brain is when I have a severe hangover and a banging headache, but I don not think that is what MS is looking for or mean to take on as a job, to take away the pain….I recon in their world it goes like this; hangover malfunction….hotline to dominos etc

Wich day is it today? ….saturday….I should drink beer, rather than rant this crap….now well, damage done

    :devilish:

A few more years and Blade Runner will seem like reality T.V or a documentary:you_crazy

a few days ago I had to read my gas meter and send the reading back to the energy company.

for some reason the call centre did not recognise the DTMF tones on my phone so some robot voice asked me to speak the meter reading

I though “nah, this is never going to work, and all the numbers will be wrong..”.I’ve used “speech to data” sofware before and found it wasn’t that reliable and you had to train it to your accent..

I tend to speak with an “estuary English” accent (i.e more like “essex/eastenders” and thought that the computer would only recognise people who spoke like Trevor Macdonald).

but the reading was 100% correct… ( a few days later I got a correct bill)

I know people were worried about this as far back as the 1980s, but in those days you would have needed so much equipment to do the job so it only would have been used rarely..

but now a private sector company has this facility for something as mundane as compiling energy meter readings…. ok this context its far from sinister and has a fair outcome for all involved.

It did make me wonder though, given that this technology has now matured, how much other “voice recognition” software may now be present on our telephone circuits? I still don’t think every call is routinely monitored (the resources just aren’t there) but i expect a phone number that is associated with raves or dealing a lot may easily have this software applied to it..
