anyone know of good ones? preferably Suffolk/Essex based as I like to support local businesses when I can but willing to use ones further afield if need be
I’m looking for “boring office PC’s” rather than l33t machines for games etc, they are for my employers
we always use recycled/second hand hardware to save costs (and to help the environment etc), it doesn’t matter if they are from 2002-3 vintage as I deliberately only use XP and Office 2003 and the rest of our business databases are web-based or use Access 2003 technology…
I also need a decent server grade machine for our telephone system (TBH doesn’t have to be a rackmounted server as such but has to have slightly overspecified PSU and good cooling as it will be switched on 24/7)
I find second hand IT stuff either broken or so old it is no good for man or beast or if it works it is overpriced. If you were to buy a system the best bet is friday-ad your more likely to get an old home pc that hasn’t been used much. I wouldn’t rely on a hard drive over 4 years old and at £30 for a new one is money well spent.
You could try http://www.freecycle.org as there are always monitors and all sorts of other pc bits offered, but recycling things like crt moniors is possibly not as enviomentally good as the crt is probably running at 200 – 250watts where as a new lcd screen only runs 20-30 watts of power.
As for cooling I quite often use old fans from blown psu’s or pc’s . They are rated at 12v but run silently and effectively on 9v. Get an old transformer from cordless phone or such like, most are 9v and wire it to the fan. Excellent for racks or sets of external drives. I also use them on the power amp as well for extra cooling through the grills. They also wire directly in to a car electrical system 12v, great if your power amp in the boot starts to cook
thanks for the tips… will sign up to freecycle again (was on it for a bit but our local one was so heavy traffic I couldn’t keep up!)
I already have several spare CRT monitors – I do use one as a console monitor on a Linux box but it is left switched off most of the time as I usually access this system via ssh..
I’d be buying new hard drives for the box intended for the telephone system anyway as it has to be left on 24/7. All I need TBH is a big tower system with a decent motherboard and PSU as the base for this…
Already got two dead PSU’s to extract fans and other components from as well – luckily I have a background in conventional electronics as well…
