  • Three Little Pigs ‘too offensive’

    By Sean Coughlan
    BBC News, education

The judges said this depiction of a pig “raised cultural issues”

A story based on the Three Little Pigs fairy tale has been turned down by a government agency’s awards panel as the subject matter could offend Muslims. The digital book, re-telling the classic story, was rejected by judges who warned that “the use of pigs raises cultural issues”.

Becta, the government’s educational technology agency, is a leading partner in the annual Bett Award for schools.

The judges also attacked Three Little Cowboy Builders for offending builders.

The book’s creative director, Anne Curtis, said the idea that including pigs in a story could be interpreted as racism was “like a slap in the face”.

The CD-Rom digital version of the traditional story of the three little pigs, called Three Little Cowboy Builders, is aimed at primary school children.

But judges at this year’s Bett Award said that they had “concerns about the Asian community and the use of pigs raises cultural issues”.

The Three Little Cowboy Builders has already been a prize winner at the recent Education Resource Award – but its Newcastle-based publishers, Shoo-fly, were turned down by the Bett Award panel.

The feedback from the judges explaining why they had rejected the CD-Rom highlighted that they “could not recommend this product to the Muslim community”.

They also warned that the story might “alienate parts of the workforce (building trade)”.

The judges criticised the stereotyping in the story of the unfortunate pigs: “Is it true that all builders are cowboys, builders get their work blown down, and builders are like pigs?”

    Animal Farm?

Ms Curtis said that rather than preventing the spread of racism, such an attitude was likely to inflame ill-feeling. As another example, she says would that mean that secondary schools could not teach Animal Farm because it features pigs?

Her company is committed to an ethical approach to business and its products promote a message of mutual respect, she says – and banning such traditional stories will “close minds rather than open them”.

Becta, the government funded agency responsible for technology in schools and colleges, says that it is standing by the judges’ verdict.

“Becta with its partners is responsible for the judging criteria against which the 70 independent judges, mostly practising teachers, comment. All the partners stick by the judging criteria,” said a Becta spokesman.

The reason that this product was not shortlisted was because “it failed to reach the required standard across a number of criteria”, said the spokesman.

Becta runs the awards with the Besa trade association and show organisers, Emap Education.

Merlin John, author of an educational technology website which highlighted the story, warns that such rulings can undermine the credibility of the awards.

“When benchmarks are undermined by pedestrian and pedantic tick lists, and by inflexible, unhelpful processes, it can tarnish the achievements of even the most worthy winners.

I agree with em The 3 little pigs is highly offensive (fuck knows who to tho) :you_crazy

You have got to be having a laugh, thats ridiculas.

I don’t let this piss me off anymore i find it all highly amusing! I wonder what will get banned next? Hopefully Snow white and the seven dwarfs cos thats really offensive to P.O.R.G’s (Person Of Restricted Growth!):weee:

Politicians are fucking slags. Turning down the book for an award because it’s offensive to muslims? , and now they’re giving up parts of our culture for the sake of people who only came here for better money?
ok not all have came here for better money, but there aint a lot of poor musilms in the uk
like ok they left war torn places, i left west belfast after living through 18yrs of killing bombing kidnapping the fucking lot, when i came here i didn’t kick up a stink about british culture nor as the Irish in general, and the Irish have suffered Racial abuse for yrs in the uk, so wtf is there problem with a fucking fairy story
And in all honesty, I really doubt the average muslim would’ve thought anyone could be offended by this story… and if there is anyone who’s offended… they maybe shouldn’t have come here if there that easy offended. Change to fit your new environment, cause in there countries thats what we do.

that is complete bollocks mate. for one, it’s not muslims who kick up about this at all, it was actually a white judge who dreamt this up. it’s the same as the “blackboard” issue, it’s pathetic white politicians trying to suck the cock of (a warped vision of) equality, not the black population.

take for example the “niggers” episode of south park in america. a lot of white people, including the organisation that regulates what gets shown, called for it to be banned. however the president of the black equal rights organisation or whatever said it should be aired and wasn’t offensive, as it was ironic and actually making a point against racism and the stigma that surrounds racism!

there are plenty of poor muslims in the uk, more so that rich probably. and to be honest, your last statement fits in with a letter to the daily mail.

    exactly.

I worked for Whitehall for several years and I’ve been told “off the record” that many of the people on these committees are deliberately stirring the pot just to judge reactions. people are being used as experimental subjects.

those in power don’t actually care if they increase anger and racial conflict in “poor” areas as the more problems there are then more justifications for their jobs and their social control measures –

anyway, why are the govt spending money giving awards to “digital books”, when many English born kids can’t or won’t read normal ones anyway?

as i said there is an issue here of Muslims, wanting so many things to be turned to there views, and yes politicians sucking cock and whatever are helping fueling this ,. but there doing it without the help of politicians, why is everything that don’t fit in with there religion wrong?
at the end of the day if they want to live here there choice, maybe they should accept that in the uk things are done different and there is cultures and customs here just like they have, why cant they do that,?
like there views on westerners are very clear on the news and whats going on in the middle east, and not only are them views aired in the middle east, the are in the uk as well..

    Edit……. the man from the daily mail said…..i wouldn’t be surprised, if there would be another rising, said the man from the daily mail {lyrics from an old song sung in Irish bars yrs ago}

who actually made the decision though? If it was a British Muslim given the current situation they would be more than happy to put their name to the complaint. Yet no Muslim names have been mentioned, nor have any spokespersons from that community come forward to the media.

Muslims have been around in Britain for 100+ years or more.

Attempts at “equal opportunities” started in the late 1970s.

If there was a fuss about “three little pigs” it would have kicked off way back then, or in the 1980s, particularly when schools started becoming more culturally aware.

In the article they first mentioned the “Asian community” before they mentioned the Muslim commmunity. Of course, not all Asians are Muslims!

This is just the work of a few people probably bored and disaffected teachers who happened to get onto the judging panels, claiming they speak for a community they probably have little awareness of. its actually worrying that these people are in charge of childrens lives..

I just think its all silly, they make it worse for racial harrasment doing things like this as it seems like it is the muslims complaining about it.

thats the point tho it isn’t “the muslims” complainin about it

If i were you, i’d take it with a pinch of salt. I used to let this annoy the fuck out of me until i actually went to a local mosque and asked em what they thought and the only thing that pissed em off were the dogooders. Quite glad i did that cos it showed me how much in common i had with em and now they are good mates.

One of my mums ex’s is sri lankan, i still keep in touch with him seeing as he practicaly brought me up he isn’t muslim but his dad is and his family are some of the nicest people i know, it just annoys me how people can’t just get on with it and stop with all the political correctness.
I’m sure if 3 little pigs was offensive they just wouldn’t read it or listen to it.

Exactly best thing is to laugh about the silliness of it all:wink:
