  • Did any one watch this program I think on BBC2 ?

(I’ve just watched it on i player)

Michael Portillo investigating current ‘trends’ in capital punishment, around the world : and highlighting the inhumanities whilst ‘searching’ for a painless, ‘humane’ (I’m not saying their can be) alternative

I found it an interesting insight, but would like others views if anyone else saw it….

as I don’t know enough about the subject and can sometimes believe things I see on TV when it’s been edited well / misdirected etc

(I found the last 3 – 4 minutes very interesting and totally against my own personal beliefs though)

I didn’t wacth it but I’ve read about it. Sounded quite interesting. The hypoxia method seems like something that could be used upon cattle etc? Or maybe it’s too expensive. Surely that is more humane way of killing animals for meat etc.

Anyway, back to the point, I guess most people on the programme who were anti hypoxia and any other humane method were of the mindset that people who have commited murders need to die horribly?

I only caught the end of it….but one thing that I do remember thinking when I saw it was….Why?

Why now does Michael Portillo decide to investigate methods of execution?

I mean its hardly as if Britain is thinking of legalising it and I can’t think of anything that has really brought it to the medias attention (except that guy who was on Death Row in America but thats only really news in Scotland).

It kindof creeped me out a bit….almost like it was some sort of voyeuristic fantasy of Michael Portillos rather than a piece of actual objective documentary film making.

    Indeed,
I dont know much about the man and couldnt understand why he was doing it – hense the post as to whether it was a misleading kind of ‘documentary’ with a hidden adgenda

which is the last few mins of the program that I really dont agree with…

i didn’t see it but here in the states all the methods are expensive and technically inhumane. the chair= you feel the electricity fry you. the gas chamber= you sit there in torment waiting for the gas to take effect and sufficate/drown. lethal injection= your entire body cramps up and you slowly sufficate. these are all horrible ways to die, and expensive. one shot between blindfolded eyes is painless, still a bad way to go but better than the alternatives.

i saw this a while back … good program .. it kind of changes him through his experiances …. really good interesting program … personaly i opt for the pinky finger death chop … but only if people have to die 😥
