  • ok well like the title says, i’ve decided that looking for dead end agency/factory jobs have pissed me off enough, realising that i wanna do a little more with my life, i’ve decided to go back to college, seeing as i’m only 20 i should still be in education.

i was debating about whether to do an Access to Medicine course or Access to Natural science, both are just as demanding as A-levels and are known qualifications to get into universities with. i’ve only applied for the Access to natural Science so far, because i believe studying knowledge about animals/enviroment/evolution/space/the human body etc etc is soo fascinating and the facts are endless!!!

but i got a letter through the post yesterday saying that they would like me to attent an interview on monday, it says that the interview will be between 2 and 3 hours long, there will be a induction seeing in as to why i would like to do the course, then there is something saying about doing an written and/or skills assessment……………i don’t know what that’s gunna be about, is that like testing you to see if you have basic english and maths skills? or will they be testing me on basic science knowledge?? any help would be appriciated!!!!

yeah so basically i’m shitting myself, i really wanna get into this course and i don’t wanna mess up, lifes been pretty damm akward at the moment, haven’t had a decent job in 6 months, i need one, haven’t had a fag now for almost 5 weeks and i need myself a nice girlfriend!!! lol.

sorry to rant on but, this is pretty important to me and i believe that this is my last chance at doing something i wanna do, if i don’t get in i thin its gunan be dead-end jobs for life :hopeless:

dont worry about it mate, college interviews are a piece of piss

not to say you shouldnt try to impress n that, main thing is just express how much you really wanna do it

but when i went for mine it was proper informal, i spent most of it talkin about anythin but the course

i went on one the other day n just said excuse me can i use the bathroom i’ll be right back. i went bathroom n riped all the copper pipe out n got £80 for it.

it was for a plumbing course, it gave em something to plumb…

    Don’t stress mate.

They wont be looking to see if you have knowledge of the course content. All they will be interested in is their retention rate. So basically they will be judging if you are the type that’s going to quit after a month or so.

Provided you show that you are really interested and willing to learn then there wont be a problem.

As for the 2-3 hour induction, it will be meeting the course tutors and having that little chat which will take up about 30 minutes, then the other 2hrs will be allocated to the skills check.

They are simply a test of your maths and english skills. They have no time limit but they usually take roughly an hour each to complete. They will start piss easy like “Click the number below”

    %
    +
    6
    ¬

and progressively get harder as you answer questions correctly. They go up to level 2 which is about C grade GCSE. They are just checking that you will cope with the basic mental requirements for the course. Eg, you’ll be able to understand any medical equations or fill out a form/read a workbook etc.

To be honest, even if you aren’t up to scratch then there will usually be provision for study support (people in the lesson to give you help with the lit/num)

You are over 19 so shouldn’t have to take the mandatory key skills that come with all full time college courses, but it may be a choice of your college to get you to do them. To be honest they are quite handy anyway, because although they are boring Lit & Num skills they should (if they are a half decent college) tailor the delivery so it relates to things you will likely be doing in your chosen proffesion.

Hope that puts your mind at rest.

so were you jokin or did you nick the copper from a college?

Bloody hell man! never thought you even got interviews that long!,mines wasnt even a “interview” all it was ,was sum random guy tellin me about the course which i obviously knew about anyway then shook my hand, not as if ur goin for a CIA job:yakk: good luck man :crazy_diz raaa

:laugh_at: bloodly hell bout time i updated my pic

Yeah, like others said, I wouldnt worry too much about it! Just remember the college is like a business in a way. They want students who are motivated to pass the course and get good grades, that way they go up in the league tables. So just tell them what you told us! You sound like you really want this, and are willing to work hard for it.

Oh yeah, and even if you dont get this course, it’s never too late. Me ‘ole mum quit nursing college when she met my dad to start a family. But 15 or so years later, she decided to give it another try as a mature student. Now she’s a fully qualified nurse, doing her dream job. raaa
