What is probably the oldest known Bible is being digitised, reuniting its scattered parts for the first time since its discovery 160 years ago. It is markedly different from its modern equivalent. What’s left out?
The world’s oldest surviving Bible is in bits. For 1,500 years, the Codex Sinaiticus lay undisturbed in a Sinai monastery, until it was found – or stolen, as the monks say – in 1844 and split between Egypt, Russia, Germany and Britain.
For those who believe the Bible is the inerrant, unaltered word of God, there will be some very uncomfortable questions to answer. It shows there have been thousands of alterations to today’s bible.
The Codex, probably the oldest Bible we have, also has books which are missing from the Authorised Version that most Christians are familiar with today – and it does not have crucial verses relating to the Resurrection.
Firstly, the Codex contains two extra books in the New Testament.
One is the little-known Shepherd of Hermas, written in Rome in the 2nd Century – the other, the Epistle of Barnabas. This goes out of its way to claim that it was the Jews, not the Romans, who killed Jesus, and is full of anti-Semitic kindling ready to be lit. “His blood be upon us,” Barnabas has the Jews cry….
i haven’t read you post but by the tital i agree … me and my m8 have been in many a deep descusion about this and have come to the conclusion that the bibal is nothing but a novel. there are people that claim to have spoken to god in this day and age and are laughed at. that could just show how sociaty has changed but in what way? … well it could be 1 of 2 things. either there is a god and people in general are less receptive to the idea that people can get messages from him or our knolage and understanding of how things work eg. the way the sun rises and sets isn’t Ra’s doing it’s a natural prosess. god is just an explination for the unexplained imo and when some one has an idea even up to the moden day it gets written down in some form like i am doing now. if some one was to read what i have written here and actualy relates to it and decides to tell other people and then there becomes a following and it gets wide spread, weather or not what i am sing is true or not there is still that “fan base” that belive it. same goes for the bible
exactly, religion has always been used to explain things people dont understand (and possibly more importanitly, fear). This effect is less so now (i believe) largly due to science and the better understanding peple have of the world around them. Once people are shown evidence and reasond thinking going back to blind faith based on an old book full of contradictions and inaccuracys is less apealing (or at least that level of denyal is harder to acheve).
Religion exists because people cant handle chaos theory *nods*.

just read your first post … i am not too shit hot on the actual facts .. but i do know the basic idea about the way religons are set up .. well the older ones any way … as far as my knolage goes is that there were some very old books that were found/stole through out history and either people interprited them into there own vertion .. or just took bits out of them .. and hid the other parts as they were detrimental to what had allready been founded … there are parts of the actual bible that are not in the “actual” bible stashed away some where in a musium in italy i belive … iirc they were found later than the parts we read and absoulutely fuck up cristianity as it it today so it’s kept hidden .. as i say my facts are sketchy .. but i think i got the general idea
im rather rusty myself tbh but yeah i think thats the basic idea
Yeah I think Christianity was also a usefull way of controlling the masses and keeping them in order too. Telling people that they must abide by certain rules otherwise they will burn in hell.
And originally only a small number of people could read and so those that could and had access to a bible and where allowed to preach where in a hugelly powerfull position in society.
That’s until men like Luther & Tyndale came along and made the Word of God more accessible to the common people!
