Internet “black boxes” will be used to collect every email and web visit in the UK under the Government’s plans for a giant “big brother” database, The Independent has learnt.
Home Office officials have told senior figures from the internet and telecommunications industries that the “black box” technology could automatically retain and store raw data from the web before transferring it to a giant central database controlled by the Government.
Plans to create a database holding information about every phone call, email and internet visit made in the UK have provoked a huge public outcry. Richard Thomas, the Information Commissioner, described it as “step too far” and the Government’s own terrorism watchdog said that as a “raw idea” it was “awful”.

Fucks sake :you_crazy:
scarey stuff :hopeless:
the worlds governments (not just the UK) are falling over each other to rein in any form of unmonitored communication.
that said, its in many ways a simple return to 20-30 years ago when the Post Office or BT (or its foreign equivalents (usually known as the Post, Telephone and Telegraph authority) had total control of electronic communications – even post privatisation many BT engineers got “transferred” to the Home Office yet worked at the frontline to monitor stuff.
Most of us over the age of 25 have actually grown up through that era…
at this time I don’t think such a database is technically feasible.
Unfortunately the impression I have got from keeping an eye on these developments is that there are a lot of techies worldwide who would contribute to developing such a project if it paid well enough :hopeless:
at the same time, how many people willingly surrender their privacy to an unaccountable private company on places like facebook and bebo?
