I was just looking for a means of saving Youtube videos to disk in order to watch them offline on my Nokia N95 8G (a great media player but doesn’t support youtube’s video format or macromedia flash very well) and found the following explanation on Google’s own blog…
Simply add a special short cut to your Safari or Firefox toolbar, or bookmark it if you’re using Internet Explorer. Click the link when you’re on a Youtube.com page who’s video you want to save and you’ll be presented with the option to save the content in MP4 format:

Notice you have to browse over to Youtube.com, I personally couldn’t get this to work with embedded videos! And this should work with high definition content just as well as the regular format so it’s worth looking for if available…
Anyway while I was looking into this I also noticed you can now save some Google video directly without using the above which is handy as well and was news to me…
