China is reported to have blocked the YouTube video-sharing website because it has been carrying video of soldiers beating monks and other Tibetans.

The date and location of the footage, posted by a Tibetan exile group, cannot be ascertained.
A Chinese government spokesman would not confirm whether YouTube had indeed been blocked.

China has a history of blocking websites which carry messages it views as politically unacceptable.

In most of China, YouTube has suddenly become inaccessible.

The site has been carrying a graphic video released by Tibetan exiles, which shows hundreds of uniformed Chinese troops swarming through a Tibetan monastery – a group of troops beat a man with batons.

In another scene a group of men, including a monk, are beaten, kicked and choked, while they lie on the ground. Some have their hands tied others appear to be unconscious.

The date and locations of the footage cannot be confirmed. Beijing maintains that it dealt lawfully with last years protests in Tibet.

On Tuesday, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said that China “is not afraid of the internet”. However, he was unable to confirm if YouTube had been blocked.

Since we have some Chineese users on here now I would like to hear a comment on this if its possible… PM me, so no-ones security is breeched.

oh plz not youtube anything but youtubeeeeeee. they banned music videos from the uk

FIRST THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA NOW THIS … I FELL SORRY FOR THE PEOPLE WHO LIVE THERE .. IT MUST BE LIKE LIVING AS A BATTERY CHICKEN .. NO OUT SIDE CONTACT!

China isn’t what it was like 30 years ago, people have plenty of outside contact but its monitored and people are held accountable for their use of telecoms services.

PV isn’t blocked – and we’ve had several Chinese users but the bulk have been spammers and others have actually posted pro-government anti Tibet propaganda – not quite sure why they picked this site as even though many people are progressive its not that “right on” politically compared to lots of other forums, with the bulk of people more interested in hedonism than activism.

China always blocks youtube for a bit when there’s something their govt don’t like but often removes the block.

Its more a simple statement to show “whose in control” of the electronic communication methods than any real attempt to hide the fact they are turning over Tibet for economic and cultural reasons, but bear in mind Google is a commercial business and the loss of the Chinese market would be a big blow to them (especially as there is that Chinese youtube people even linked to on here with all those illegall copied “shaun the sheep” videos!)

Sadly, most Chinese are well aware of what is going on and many support it for the same reason many Westerners support their troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. None of them particularly enjoy war or oppression, but they realise its “what fills their rice bowl”.

Tibet is sitting on a lot of copper and other useful minerals the Chinese obviously want their hands on for the future, and provides a surveillance and vantage point into the Republic of India.

The best anyone can hope for is the “third way” solution from the Dalai Lama which is supposed to create a situation similar to England and Scotland.

If there isn’t a peace, the Chinese will cull out the Tibetans if it takes 20,50 or 200 years – using both the slaughter of males and the rape of females as “concubines” who are then forced to bring their babies to term.

There is a reason why there are now only about 3-5 main groups of Chinese people from what used to be hundreds of ancient Oriental tribes – centuries of war and bloodshed and genocide has occured over the years…

(I am half Chinese BTW on the fathers side of my family).
