  • BBC NEWS | England | London | G20 police officer is suspended

    Quote:
The officer captured on video apparently pushing a man during the G20 protests in London has been suspended, police have said.

Ian Tomlinson, 47, died from a heart attack minutes after the incident on 1 April, near the Bank of England.

The Metropolitan Police suspended the officer after the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) called for that action to be taken.

The IPCC has launched a criminal investigation into the death.

Is the IPCC not effectively run by the fucking police?

It needs to be a criminal investigation in my opinion. If somebody had twatted someone whilst out pissed and then that person had a heart attack a minute later, he’d be done for manslaughter.

The fact that it was a policeman who is supposed to be restrained and not some random person makes it all the worse imo.

    Quote:
The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) became operational on 1 April 2004. It is a Non-Departmental Public Body (NDPB), funded by the Home Office, but by law entirely independent of the police, interest groups and political parties and whose decisions on cases are free from government involvement.

We have a legal duty to oversee the whole of the police complaints system, created by the Police Reform Act 2002, our aim is to transform the way in which complaints against the police are handled.

It says its independant but you never know – and I dont know enough personally to comment

Scratch that, I did a bit of research and members of the IPCC are appointed by the House of Commons. I did however find this:

    Quote:
In February 2008 over a hundred lawyers who specialise in handling police complaints resigned from its advisory body, citing various criticisms of the IPCC including a pattern of favouritism towards the police, indifference and rudeness towards complainants and complaints being rejected in spite of apparently powerful evidence in their support.[2] The IPCC responded to these criticisms with a letter to the Guardian.
    Quote:
The IPCC, which has been criticised for its handling of the case, said in a statement: “The IPCC has called for the officer to be suspended. The MPS [Metropolitan police service] has now informed us that the officer has suspended with immediate effect.”

The Met said it had independently decided to suspend the officer, who was a member of its public order specialist unit the Territorial Support Group: “Although the MPS consulted with the IPCC the decision was taken independently by the MPS having considered all the circumstances,” it said.

Brian Paddick, a former Metropolitan police deputy assistant commissioner, said public confidence in the force could be damaged if it did not take “decisive action”.

He warned that the Met could be open to accusations of double standards when dealing with officers suspected of wrongdoing.
The officer in the video, who was wearing riot gear and whose face was covered by a balaclava, identified himself to his manager and the IPCC yesterday as fresh pictures suggested he had removed his shoulder number and covered his face with a balaclava before hitting Tomlinson with a baton and then pushing him to the ground on Cornhill, in the City of London, last Wednesday.

The police officer who attacked Ian Tomlinson shortly before he died had still not been interviewed by the Independent Police Complaints Commission last night, more than 48 hours after the guardian …….

Ian Tomlinson death: G20 riot officer in footage has not been interviewed | UK news | The Guardian

    Quote:
    Hardwick said of the assault:

“We don’t have CCTV footage of the incident… there is no CCTV footage, there were no cameras in the location where he was assaulted.”

Speaking to More 4 News, the IPCC confirmed Hardwick’s comment, saying that the CCTV cameras overlooking the incident were not working.

    Channel 4 – News – IPCC: CCTV wasn’t working

it’s an outrageous thing that he hasn’t even been arrested and interviewed under caution. if any member of the public had assaulted someone who had then died a few minutes they would be arrested immediately, charged and be waiting for their court date

Thats the OB for you. Basically just a great big gang who always look after their own. That prick might be suspended but i bet he’ll keep his job at the end of it!

if he does stay in a job he should be on lollipop duty

The family of Ian Tomlinson face a three-year wait for an inquest into his death, according to legal experts, who say that pressures on the coroners’ system are “frustrating the grieving process” for victims’ relatives.

The claim is likely to dismay critics of the police, who have expressed concerns about how Tomlinson’s death is being investigated. According to the first post-mortem

examination, Tomlinson, a 47-year-old homeless newspaper vendor with a drink problem, died after suffering a heart attack while caught up in last week’s G20 protests.

Video footage appears to show a riot policeman hitting Tomlinson with a baton and shoving him to the ground. There are also claims that Tomlinson may have been bitten by a police dog, and that he came into contact with the police on several occasions before the alleged assault was captured on video. There are concerns that the alleged assault – which took place as Tomlinson was trying to get back to his hostel – may have contributed to his heart attack. A second post-mortem was carried out on Thursday.

hasnt it come out now that he died of internal bleeding and it had nothing to do with a heart attack? cant belive it really. (guess i shouldnt be surprised tho that they lie to cover their own back)

yeah the thorough post-mortem revealed it was abdominal bleeding

they rushed a next-day post-mortem which claimed it was a heart attack, then released a statement saying he had not been involved with any police that day, adding that he was a smoker and heavy drinker

pretty standard practice, institutional cover-ups from the met

had the film not been sent to the guardian, the mass-public would have believed them and all.

some of the papers seem to be missing the point though
yes police brutality is coming under fire from all angles, this is undoubtedly a good thing
but that is directed at individual policemen
what also needs too be challenged are the institutional cover-ups from the top-dogs themselves, effectively showing that the police truly do think they can do what they like and not be accountable, completely 1984.

it’ll be in the media for a couple of weeks but it hasn’t caused enough public outrage for it to make any real difference. the news has swiftly moved.

fucking bollocks i just wrote a fucking real long answer back to you boothy, but i fucking deleted it somehow. arrghhhhh!
the gist was the head of the met should resign as as shocking it is that ian tomlinson died it is worse that the met tried to cover it up and sort of blame it on the protesters by saying they were throwing bottles. it is just by pure luck that not more people were killed by being cracked with battons.
If it wasnt for all the protesters and news people there taking photos (now against the law!) then we would have never known the truth!
well pissed of i deleted it. Might try again later… have a look at that site i posted in the other thread, pretty much what i was saying really…
