  • Im heading back to California and would like to play around with producing / promoting an event given that they have no scene over there. I have never done such a thing and would like some advice. I have been around the scene for about 20 years (god Im old) so I think I would have a good perspective. I would like to keep the spirit alive and have it be a free thing, my question is there any way to at least break even when putting on a free event? What things to consider when trying to put something like that together. How would I go about finding out if there is even an interest in such a thing. Anyway thanks for the advice !

    Chris

to be honest I dont have much of a clue,

but as a ‘punter’ I”m more than happy to give a donation to the crew who put on a party to help cover their costs –

and to say thank you for their efforts, and usually bring bin bags etc and will clear up my rubbish and others

fly me out and put me up and i’ll help you !

Every ‘free’ party ive ever been to has cost me money to get in, usually the guys on the door have buckets and say that suggested donation is a couple of quid.. or bucks in your case.. thats how you break even on a ‘free’ party.

    Thanks for the tips !!

If you are from the states look up a guy called Doc Martin, he was one of the early guys in CA who started up free parties form what I have been lead to believe, he’s quite famous now, comes over to Lodnon to DJ at Fabric every once and a while. maybe ther’s an interview with him whereby he talks abou how he used to go about it?

Hope that info is correct for you, not much really.

    WOW !

Good on you for doing this and all the very best of good luck to you and your party full power to you ,but I find it pretty hard to belive that the one of the epicenters of the psy/hippy movement has no free pary scene , if that is so then I feel a little sad .

For promoting ideas spread the word far and wide, what type of music you playing at this party?

ask around at venues, bars, clubs etc. some will let you do a night for free hire if you can convince them that they will make their money on drinks, they might even have a sounds system, one club even gave us 10% of the bar takings because they sold so much booze.

look for new clubs or struggling clubs as they are more likely to go for it rather than somewhere fully booked.

a lot of people will play for free, again if you can convince them that they will be playing to a packed crowd of people who are loving it.

then you’ve just got to get these people you’ve promised to come down. just make black n white flyers, photocopy and hand out as much as you can, get a bit of a buzz going. if it’s a free night people are bound to come. make sure you put a bit of info about the night on the flyer, genres of music, any drinks deals, friendly crowd etc. cause if it’s your first night people will wanna know what to expect.

that should get you going, has always worked for me in the past 😀
