As hopefully some of you will know, I have a blog called Sonicrampage.org where I post various mixes I have done across different dance music styles, each with a cover, cue file, and some kind of extra material like an essay and/or photos.
Anyways, I have recently done a mix called ‘We Control The Night’, which over 85 minutes goes from 135 bpm old skool rave techno right through to face-ripping 190 bpm gabba (for the spotters it starts with ‘Alien Creed’ by Omni Trio and ends with ‘I’m The Fuck You Man’ by Wedlock). It’s a laugh!
The idea I have for the accompanying blog posting is to ask a simple question: what’s your favorite rave memory? It can be funny, it can be weird, it can be whatever. The mix is my tribute to the magical world of old skool underground raving, so the more entertaining, the better. My favourite stories will be compiled and put in the accompanying article.
If you want to participate, or if you have any rave pictures or scans of flyers or tickets (preferably from the 90’s, but that’s not necessary) you can send me, that would be great! You can write as much or as little as you want, the only thing I would ask is that you provide your first name, your age, and your city.
If you want to participate, you can either write below, or if you prefer, you can email me at pearsall
I went to the Brixton Academy last October for an Australian couples leaving do – they were heading back to Kangarooland you see and were having one big night before they went. I had a little homemade stew consisting of alcohol, speed and MDMA, but if I’m honest – which I always am I’ll have you know, there seemed to be little effect on the whole dinner when I was roaming like a sex pest inside the venue. That was until I saw from a not so far distance a man dressed up as a woman – how funny! He looked ridiculous with is ugly features and enormous push up fake breasts. So I’ve grabbed them haven’t I – and fuck me they’re only real aren’t they! Turns out it was a bird after all. For a good long second I have my hands firmly clasped over the top of each titty with both of us sharing a look of horror and disgust on our faces – although she probably had more right than I had. She had a fella with her too, whom I quickly shifted over to and said, ‘fuck me, I thought she was a man’ which really didn’t help matters. He couldn’t have been her boyfriend as I think he was beginning to break into a smile, although I wasn’t going to hang about to find out. As for speaking to the chick, fuck that, what was I supposed to say – ‘Sorry, I thought you were a dude?’ So I legged it into the mass of people and hid.
1) the magic roundabout
2) a new years in acton about 4-5 years ago.. 20 sound systems.. fucking immense.
3) Skumtech at the BBC props warehouse.. now that was fucking insane. You could build your own chill out area out of all the sofas and tables lying around.

yeah that was totally crazy. Massive warehouses, many rooms and floors, all filled with washing machines, sofas, chairs, beds, kitchen applicanes, books (they tipped the books onto the floor and made a dancefloor of books), sound systems everywhere of course,
rooms full of folders and files that said things like ‘top secret NHS corruption report’. we didnt know it was the bbc props warehouse at the time so we really couldnt work out what the fuck was going on with this building.
was so nice to build yourself a little chill out area out of furniture when you wanted to time out

You may only on one condition – if the story is to be printed on a sleeve of a vinal (actually I’m still a bit unsure what you’re using the blog for) then you send me a link / tell me the vinal so I can go out and get my hands on it. It’s always nice to admire ones work I say…

one of my best rave experiances was one of my first raves at bagleys warehouse in i think 1999 and i had just arived and was coming up on some nice pills dancing to hardcore when i giant mechanical spider walked across the dancefloor (a person in stilts and fancy dress) and then some giant preditor looking thing with industrial pipeing tubes as hair … i’ll allways have that image in my mind
