I mentioned this in the rant thread but its something i’ve been increasingly starting to get concerned about. When I moved to Ipswich in 2006, I met a fair few people off this website and went partying with them. Initially they were in their mid 20s to 30s/40s, “my” sort of age group.
in recent times, most of my age group have given up parties totally. some have had kids and settled down, others sadly have had kids but their relationship broke up and are single/part-time parents, but few go out raving any more, not even to legals.
I still see some of my original older mates, they live way out in the sticks so its a long bike ride, but in ’07 I befriended a lot of the younger lot in town from the local crews.
However in recent times I’ve drifted away a bit – I know its a bit daft but as a single male in his late 30s I wonder if its “right” for me to have such a quantity a lot of younger friends, and take part in a contentious youth culture scene? I don’t go chasing after underage girls like some “rum old boys” do round here (although I’ve had to fend off attention from some!) , nor I am I a drug dealer (got a decent career, a house and no need to do any sort of crime) but I feel sometimes not only the cops, and parents but even some ravers do wonder “why is someone that age still raving and hanging around with “kids?”
I’ve heard comments that “people should give it up when they reach their 40s”, but if the rest of your life is OK I disagree with that – however since the zero tolerance it seems the only people still going to rave-type events (even legals) are getting younger and younger and they are all giving up from age 23-25
should my age group settle down and go to funky house / garage type events (fuck that! would rather not get shot at!) or just stay at home?
my advise is do what you want to do and not what you think other people want you to do – for a start raving has never really been socialy excepted in the first place, as you say mby “tollerated” but never excepted fully. I’ve met a fair few ravers older than u by a good decade or so b4. ur only as young as u feel and u def shouldn’t let ur fears and worries about what u think other people think get in the way as long as u know ur not doing wrong (as u say drug dealing or looking for jail bait) that is if u want to carry on raving ur self.
might be a regional thing as London has always had a very wide age range of party heads. EA used to be like that but its getting narrower and seems rarer to see anyone over 22/23 at the local raves….
I’m not worried about work colleagues and I don’t think I even do anything “criminal” these days but whilst I don’t feel “old” as such I find it hard to relate to some of the younger people – not the ones on here but in my area, as I get a bit dismayed by how superficial/impulsive they are (worse than when I was that age, TBH I’ve not really changed my views and attitudes all that much from my mid 20s!)
I think some of it might just be a local backlash against the stupid things what happened here from 2005-07 leading to zero tolerance and all the “sensible” folk not partying any more or a division between them and “k-heads”, but its a shame as I actually miss the atmosphere of the last EA parties I went to before it all went tits up..
i know what u mean about the supeficial stuff as alot of my old school mates have only just got into raving in the last year or two and really don’t understand the culture the way i see it having started raving in 99/2000 when i was just into secondary school. i think the morals and values of the younger raveing generation has changed from what i remeber it – used to be all smiles and the likes now it’s who can dribble the most (alltho i can dribble quite alot i try not to)
what i am doing atm is instead of going out to raves every weekend for the sake of it with the posibility of them being shit or having a crap crowd i’ll tend to bide my time save a bit of cash up and go farther afild and goto something a bit special – this way i still get my fix and am not over doing it at the same time nor going to shit places just to go out

I think people of your age group should do whatever they like really, doesn’t seem weird to me to see 35 year olds at party’s (other than its unusual). I only age related problem I have with partying is when u see 15 year old kids there (very rare although some small pikey town ones iv been too were just full of kids).
I guess the only issue I would have with it was weather I would get on with younger people without a few more of my peer group there.

hi.. the way i see it is age is just a number… although statistically it may be rare, it is in no way weird – you are doing nothing wrong. it just so happens that they are younger than you.. so what, you share a common interest! if you had no common interest at all things could be odd..
ps, do you like reggae?

Isn’t it “Does the pope shit in the woods?” :weee:
btw although that quote looks odd it had a missing bit of something else which meant to say “I don’t think I’m doing anything wrong attending raves, just a shame more people my age group aren’t there any more..”
I definitely do actually like reggae… at about age 12 I remember even getting a old car radio my dad had hauled out of his car and connecting it to a 12v supply and a load of wire antennas so I could pick up this reggae pirate in London :laugh_at:
The people I see at parties regularly exceed your age; I see a good cross section at the parties I go to and the oldest are well over 50. You are as old as you feel 😉
I know plenty of people in their mid-late thirties that still party, its not unusual and its certainly nothing you should worry about.

raaaraaaraaaraaaraaaraaaraaaraaaraaaraaaraaaraaaraaaraaaraaaraaaraaaraaaraaaraaa
I often see people old enough to be my parents at legal events (not some dodgy old man looking for young talent, but actually there for a good stomp and laugh with the rest of the punters) and I see a fair few at free partys too.. these usually seem to be good friends with the younger lot.
Why should age stop who you are friends with? I have friends in varying ages, from 16/17 through to 40/50..
I think as everyone says, you should do what you want, if you like having a good time, and you are doing noone harm or wrong then its fine.
I think I’ll probably keep raving when I’m your age and possibly older, unless it all stops which I dont think it will, or gets too chavvy, or attitude.
I’m starting to feel the same way, although I’m a girl and I’m 29. But most my friends my age have kids, and most friends i go to parties with are younger than me, i think i get away with it since no one thinks I’m older than 20-21. But then again when i get even older i don’t want to stop just because other people think i should. So I’ll just keep doing what i want, not getting kids and settling down, i still have lots to do in my life!
