I click on the IE icon, the hour glass appears for a few seconds but nothing happens. I tried reinstalling IE 8 but problem is still the same.

I have scanned my PC (using AntiMalware) and did find a few Trojans, but having removed all these I still have the same problem. I did a complete virus scan (using Symantec) and found nothing. I have also scanned the registry (using Advanced SystemCare), found a lot of problems and fixed all of them, but still have the problem.

I remember this happened after some Java icon appeared in the bottom LHS of the screen, and also about that time the web page stopped responding. Maybe something that was enabled is now disabled??

I am now using Firefox, but am still curious to know how to fix this.

Hello IT support, have you turned it on and off again? 😉

sounds odd, maybe reinstall Java?

use a decent browser, like firefox or opera

although downloading it without internet explorer maybe tricky

although, with no browser how did you come on here to post?? 😛

I had to download Firefox on another PC.

OK Firefox ftw, but it will still drive me mad if I cannot pinpoint what is the problem. I am not really an IT tekkie..

I wish I could accept life on this level and let go of it, but I cannot. I need to know why…

Iexplorer breaks alot when i use it too .. and i have heard that it does the same thing for quite a few people … you should leave working out what is wrong with it to the div’s at microsoft that broke it (never got it working properly in the first place) and relax, put your feet up and enjoy trouble free surfing of the web with firefox. 😉

it might be starting up the internet explorer as a process but not showing it. try clicking it, and then bringing up the task manager.. is internet explorer in the list of processes? that would indicate that it is running… but … not showing

I will check this Mr J, but dont think it will shows as a process in the Task Manager window.

Tried removing all BHOs (all related to google) with HijackThis. I reinstalled Java and IE8, I scanned again using Spybot and found a few suspicious entries. Waiting now for it to restart. Will probably also do a scan using Ad Aware….

sure u know but make sure windows update is on and all the service packs and internet secuirty updates are installed.

Still not solved.

If I try:

Control Panel -> System, System -> Advanced tab,

Click on settings (performance) then visual efects tab,

Select ‘adjust for best performance’

IE now works with the basic retro window styling BUT not with XP settings
