Voters turned away as polls close

Hundreds of voters across the country have been turned away from polling stations as long queues formed ahead of the 2200 BST voting deadline.

Turnout was predicted to be higher than recent elections, including 2005.

There were three-hour queues in Sheffield, voters were turned away in Manchester and police said one London polling station was open at 2230 BST.

The law says polling station doors must close at 2200 and no-one can be issued with a ballot paper after that time.

but the TV seems more up to date.

Hundreds of people were unable to vote as they were still queuing when the ballot boxes closed at 10pm.

Voters were turned away in Hackney, Hull and Lewisham, according to reports.

A Sky News viewer said people were unable to vote in Weybridge, Surrey, at the Oatlands Park polling station.

There were reports of similar situations in other parts of the country.

Voters in Hackney, east London, said they were turned away from a polling station in Triangle Road after some had been forced to queue for more than an hour and a half.

They staged a sit-in protest at the building after the ballot boxes closed and police had to be called.

And officers were called to a polling station in Manwood Road, Lewisham, south London, where around 300 people had yet to vote by 10pm, Scotland Yard said.

The Electoral Commission said it would be undertaking a “thorough review” of what had happened in constituencies where people were unable to vote.

A Conservative party spokesman said: “These are very disturbing stories which clearly need to be thoroughly investigated.”

Asked if the situation amounted to a “scandal”, Olympics Minister Tessa Jowell replied: “I think it is.

“These are queues of people exercising their democratic right and then being denied it.”

Its up to the individual candidates to call for a re-election of their area if they think its unfair.

    may 6th 2010: utter fail

What hope do we have when the govenment can’t even organise there own election propperly >.<

Liberty are considering taking them (the goverment?) to court using human rights legislation (provides more protection than election legislation).

Liberty announced today that it is looking into allegations that hundreds of potential voters were disenfranchised amid chaos at polling stations around the country.

The organisation is calling for people prevented from exercising their fundamental right to vote to contact Liberty with a view to further action.

Shami Chakrabarti, Director of Liberty, said:

“Shameful scenes of hundreds of voters turned away from polling stations are unworthy of a mature democracy like ours. This scandal must not be lost in all the current speculation about a new Government and the relevant authorities cannot be left to investigate themselves.

Anyone who feels they were denied their fundamental right to vote should contact us urgently. Liberty will use all legal and campaigning means to ensure that this disgrace is never repeated. This is particularly pressing given the possibility of further elections in the medium term.”

raaa raaa raaa run em down!

Anyone who couldn’t vote is apparently entitled to at least £750 pounds in compensation.

Well wish I wasn’t allowed to vote now lol!
