Police have withdrawn their objection to a planned “legal rave” after organisers ramped up security measures to prevent a repeat of drugs problems witnessed at last year’s event.
The Unity Tribe festival at Cockley Cley Warren, near Swaffham, is being planned by a team of volunteers as a social enterprise, with all profits from the dance and techno music event given to local charities or environmental causes.
A licensing application submitted to Breckland Council requests permission to provide live music, dancing facilities and the sale of alcohol between 8pm on Saturday, September 11, until 2pm the following afternoon.
Norfolk police’s licensing officer Tony Grover originally objected to the application, saying that the event management plan (EMP) did not include sufficient measures to ensure a “safe and drug-free environment”.
His letter to Breckland’s licensing department said, although there was no serious disorderly behaviour, the free flow of festival-goers between the arena and the car park in 2009 meant the supply and use of illegal drugs could not be effectively prevented.
But now Mr Grover has said he is satisfied that an amended version of the EMP, drafted by security firm Event Guard, had resolved those issues, so he would withdraw his representation.
