I’ve found more detailed reports (one below). the environment ministry folks are watching the bears and are giving them a chance – if they all disperse now the hippies who were feeding them are nicked, they will be left alone.
If they continue hanging around the area looking for food they will be put down before they end up in the more populated areas causing problems like what happened in Japan (and the Japanese just shot all the bears). Bears are relatively plentiful (so unfortunately not as protected as tigers etc) and also pose a threat to people – so sadly they can end up paying a high price for straying into human areas.
the bears are not however suspected of consuming any of the plants!

Also some Canadian even tried stealing the drugs back off the cops and guarding them with explosives! He got nicked though, and is for explosives and firearms charges too..
